I just had to comment that I'm amazed at the power of hydraulics. I'm speaking mostly of the way the dipper stick is moved on a backhoe. It has such a mechanical DISadvantage with where the fulcrum is. I understand why it is where it is, but it still really impresses me!

I have a Cat excavator at my shop that I'm changing all the hoses on. I was looking at the cylinders on the large arm coming off the frame out toward the bucket. I was amazed at how shallow of an angle it is from the cylinder base to the pivot point. The force it must take to move that arm at that fulcrum must be, well, lots! So, I know exactly what you mean.
