I'm wondering if it would overkill or not advisable to use larger hydraulic hoses in a compressed air situation.

I know they can more than handle the pressure, but I wasn't sure about the temperature. I'm thinking of using a hose instead of copper tubing between the compressor and tank. I know it may be more expensive and I'd have to deal with the fittings, but I'm thinking about some other high volume (CFM) projects that would benefit from heavy duty hoses.

Thoughts?

Thanks,

-Steve

Definitly overkill but I can't think of any problems that might arise. I have had hydraulic hoses much hotter than I have ever had the hose coming from the air compressor. For my compressor I just bought a couple of feet of 1" air line and fittings to go between the compressor shut off valve and the hard copper lines in the shop.
Re-read your post and noticed that you said from compressor to tank. Hotter application but should still be within the capacity of hydraulic hose. Still overkill I think. Perhaps others have some thoughts on this.

I had a problem getting my compressor hooked up (I think there was a piece missing or something). I had a hydraulic hose guy make up a line with a big fitting at one end and a smaller size on the other end to fit a regulator. It's been at 2 locations and it was at least 15 yrs. ago. Still no problems at all.FWIW

being a painter i use air everyday, all day long. the nice rubber goodyear hoses last on average of 2 years before they are shot. i have one 70ft airhose made of the low pressure (250psi) aeroquip line. going on 10 years now and its the best airline i've got. of course if i had to buy it (which i didn't) it probably would have cost a fortune. i got a bug up my *** one day back at my old job at the yacht factory and i made it up. when i quit i was sure to take my airline.:D if you are using it from the compressor pump to the tank however i dont see a problem other than cooling. that copper line many times has cooling fins on it and the big pully usually has fan blades in it that blows across the copper and helps to cool that super hot air. what you could end up with is the tank being hotter under heavy use which if you dont have a refridgerated drier you might see more water comming out your hose rather than collecting in the tank of the compressor.

I would not use standard hydraulic hose. If your looking for a flexible hose to run from the compressor head to the tank I would use what is called compressor discharge hose. It's the type of hose used on compressors on medium/heavy duty road truck/tractors. It's a flexible hose with a stainless steel braided cover designed for the high heat application.

That's exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

And thank you to brandoro, 59ih340 and bota jim for your comments as well.

yes thats the stuff to use hyd hose in that situation will have no life as vibration high heat and dry air will stuff the hose in no time as someone who works in the field i would not make one for any of my customers

Dieselpower is correct. You should use steel braided teflon. It is made to hold up to the vibration that the compressor gives off. If you want to look at it online, go to the Eaton-Weatherhead website. On page 76 of the catalog is H243 PTFE hose made especially for an application like this.

I'm not sure what diameter hose your looking for but any good truck repair shop should be able to supply you with 1/2 and 5/8 inch compressor discharge hose. Forgot to mention that.
