I'm new to hydraulics. I bought a log splitter last summer and it came with Mag #1 ISO 32-light fluid. Is the ok to use this in my CK 35HST tractor. What are the main things to look for in types of fluid?

I was hoping you'd get a better answer than I am going to give. I suspect the mixing of oils is a non issue, but paranoia makes me wonder. After a dozen (probably a lot less) extensions/retractions of the hydraulic cylinder the oils will be completely mixed. You could drain the oil in the cylinder and replace it with an exactly compatable fluid, but don't know if it's extreme. I guess I didn't add much help here except to agree with your question.

I didn't mix the fluids together . I just have a few gallons of the Mag #1 and if it would be compatible I wouldn't need to buy more. Thanks

I know very little about hydraulics, but HST transmissions use a lighter (I believe, might be heavier) oil. I personally wouldn't use anything other than what is specified, you'll definitely void your warranty if it causes an issue.

It is best to use manufacturer recommendations for the fluid for their products until the warranty runs out, and then if you have the knowledge to interpret the
labels you can find something more suitable.

Hydraulics seems to work well with a large variety of fluids, such as ATF, motor oil, and blended fluids such as HyTrans and the rest of the pack.

My PowerTrac uses10W-40 engine motor oil as the hyd fluid, and has been using it about 20 years. It seems to work very well, and can be found just about anywhere.

Case equipment seems to like HyTrans, but they allow ATM or motor oil as an option.

If the log splitter is a 3pt splitter, it will use what the tractor uses.

Thanks, I will use " their" fluid until the warranty runs out and then do some investigation on what can be used.

Your log splitter just needs hydraulic oil for the pump and cylinder. Your tractor needs it for the pump, cylinders, gears, and brakes. I believe they use different additives when the oil must work for several functions. Also, the tractor hydro oil is a multi-viscosity oil, 10W-30 weight.

ISO hydraulic fluids are designed for systems that typically work at higher temps and pressures than our tractors. These fluids have anti-wear/anti-friction additives to reduce wear at the higher temps. This fuid work be jsut fine in the tractor EXCEPT for the wet disc brakes. The anti-wear additives will soak into brake disc material causing it to soften and loose its friction. Result - lose of brakes.

I think that answers my question. I'll get the right stuff.....
