I have a problem with hydraulic fluid leaking under the tractor right under where your feet are. Took to a repair man and he said the tractor would have to be taken apart and was too big of a job for him. Any suggestions on what could be the problem and how to fix it.
The L48 has the same front wheel drive setup as the grand Lxx10 machines. The driveshaft from the transmission passes through the clutch housing on its way to the front. The oil seals at the clutch housing are known to leak, requiring splitting the tractor to fix. The L48 has a big extra frame that has to be taken off first (see .pdf)
Splitting an L48 is a lot of wrenching. The WSM pretty much shows disassembly of most of the tractor, although some have taken off just the main frame, leaving the loader and center console mostly in place. I bought my L48 from a TBN member who bailed on it after his dealer quoted over $10k to fix its ailing HST unit. (long story here.
There was a TBN post like yours a couple years ago - the leak wasn't severe but the owner didn't want to drop oil on other peoples' property. I remember suggesting tying up a catch pan under it with some of those oil-absorbent towels the home heating oil delivery people use. Can buy a lot of UDT and towels for the cost of splitting it.
