I tried searching this, but did not find what I am really looking for.

Question - is there a better material to choose for hydraulic fittings, and are there brands to stay away from.

I have been looking at a lot of pictures on running my hoses and fittings for my grapple, but I keep seeing rusted fittings and couplers. There there are photos of brass or stainless fittings that look great.

In reviewing part sources I see a lot of different nomenclature on plating or fitting materials. How do I understand all this, and if I want good trouble free fittings, what types of materials or brands should I be looking for.

I apologize in advance as being an retired civil engineer I tent to over think stuff, but I detest rusty fittings - makes me wonder what is going on inside the system, as I know moisture does get inside too.

Thanks and Merry Christmas to everyone.

Most all steel fitting will rust sooner or later, depending on the plating material.

Stainless fittings should look nicer longer, but there are different grades of stainless, and some will rust.

Brass will not rust, but will corrode. Brass is not used very much in hyd because of the pressure rating.

I have seen and used most all the brands, but I have no personal choice.

My Power-Trac used the Faster brand QD, but I will use anything that will fit.

Some people just like certain brand names.

I don't know of any that are prone to failure more than the others.

Most companies will tell you that they have the best.

Why not use whatever is on the tractor now. You have several choices to choose from such as ball type, poppet type and flat face couplers, and screw on.

Just a few.

Faster, Safeway, Aeroquip, Foster, Hansen, Holmbury, Parker, Perfecting, Snaptite, Tomco

JJ already answered this well, but I can add a few more things.

As JJ stated, stainless steel comes in different grades. Hydraulic fittings and adapters are usually made with type 316, and yes, they resist corrosion a long time, but they typically cost anywhere from 8x to 10x the cost of plated steel fittings. For this reason, most people are happy to use the plated steel. Unless you are in an especially corrosive environment (salt water or chemicals, for example), it is hard to justify the additional cost of stainless.

Even then, we have a lot of commercial fisherman who buy fittings from our store. Most of them prefer to use steel fittings and paint their assemblies to provide an additional layer of protection against the salt water.

You can compare some examples below. The first link is for our standard 2404 (JIC Male x NPTF Male Pipe) steel adapters. The second link is for the same fitting in 316 Stainless Steel.

Steel Fittings: JIC 37° Male x NPTF Male Pipe

JIC 37° x NPTF Male (Stainless)

As for brands, I don't think there are any major quality differences from one to another. I suggest you shop for price and service. Find a supplier who saves you money, has the fittings you need in stock, and consistently meets your needs with the least amount of hassle.

Ken, I've recently purchased a JCB with the infamous BSP fittings,
I would like to get adapters to convert these to regular ones ( jic or whatever is normal).
I haven't gotten all the sizes yet or figured out how many i will need, but I know in my area I'll have a heck of a time changing out a hose if need be with these BSP threads and fittings,,
so my question to you is, haveing been on your site, you seem to have what I'm looking for,
do you ship to Canada?, I also noticed you don't accept paypal.
Thank's

Yes, we ship to Canada by either Priority Mail or UPS. Most of our Canadian customers choose Priority Mail because UPS can get a bit excessive with add-on brokerage fees for international shipments. We don't accept PayPal, but we do take all major credit cards.
