Hydraulic cylinder repair

I am a new member and would like to know if anyone knows how to take apart a cylinder on a Kubota BL4690 backhoe? There is a little slot on the side of the barrel, what is it?

I have a L3400 and just installed a used BL4690 hoe on it.

Pics would be very helpfull......the slot may be a retaining lock wire wound around the gland, it comes out as you turn the gland
