I was just searching Ebay and stumbled across a hydraulic unit (3phase powered) and it lists the cylinder as 750lbs. The cylinder I have came from a furniture mill and had an electric hydraulic unit powering it. I'm afraid if I hook this thing up to a 22 gpm pump with 2500-2750 lbs pressure I may have a potential missile on my hands. Is there anything I can look up to see what type/pressure cylinder I have? There are no markings on the cylinder, all I have are the dimensions.
Specs are: 4.5" bore
1.75" ram
30" stroke
the mounting clevis is huge with a 1 1/8" pin, the pin on the other end is the same size.
The place where my cyl came from built and steamed furniture parts, the cyl was used in a verticle position on a press.
thanks for any help

that steel plate attached is 1" thick.

Hydraulic cylinders are typically rated at 2500 or 3000 psi. The rod maybe a little llight for use on a log splitter if using the full 30 inch stroke.
750 lbs is the weight of all 3 units.

A hyd shop can test it for you.

At 22 GPM, the cyl will extend at 5.3 ips, or 5.66 sec, and retract at 6.3 ips, or4.76 sec

If you wanted to use it as a log splitter cyl, you could set the relief pressure low to start with and raise it as needed.

If to much pressure, the seals will probably bypass..

Kind of what I thought but wanted to make sure, thanks guys.

Rod and pin diameters are a bit light for it to be a 3000psi cylinder. Most 3000PSI 4-1/2" cylinders are 1-1/4" pins and 2" rods.

If their is no stampings on the cylinder, are you sure its a 4-1/2" bore?? How did you measure it? and what is the outside diameter of the cylinder barrel?? Cause if it is indeed a 4-1/2" bore, the OD should measure OVER 5". This would give us some indication of what it can handle.

While it is typical that hydraulic cylinders are rated at 2500, and 3000, I have seen some rated for 1500. Allthough they are typically smaller cylinders.

OK, after some measuring, the cylinder I have isn't as big as I thought. It measures 4.5" and it looks to be a 3.75" bore? Maybe I will use this cylinder for something else and just break down and buy a 4x24x2 from tractor supply or somewhere with cheap shipping. I could always take the 4x24x2 ram off my dump trailer for the winter and use it? LOL

Its probabally a 4" cylinder. As a 3.75 is either meteric or some specially made peice. But 3-3/4 is NOT a common size.

If it is 4", and it measures 4.5" od, I'd say 2500psi is a safe guess.

I thought it was a 4". I guess I'll use it, I can always upgrade if it deems necessary.
thanks,
