I just bought a "no name" brand hydraulic auger with not a stitch of documentation. It has a third line, which I've concluded is a case drain line to be plumbed back to the tank unrestricted.

The problem I have is that when running the auger, as soon as I get down a few inches, the auger stops spinning and the case drain opens up full and proceeds to simply cycle all the fluid back to the tank.

Any ideas?

That does not sound good as the case drain is used to expel the lube fluid for the bearings, and help take some of the heat away from the motor. Are you sure the motor valve is not relieving.

- The case drain circuit is designed for leakage only (minimal flow at low pressure).

- The tractor case drain circuit must be less than 25 psi to prevent hydraulic motor seal damage.

- The case drain circuit is not designed for motor return flow.

Are you using the hyd motor on a motor spool circuit?

Are you using QD's in the motor circuit?

To clarify a little, I'm hooking up to a Bobcat 843 with standard hydraulics - not high flow.

I hooked the unit up to the auxiliary hydraulics and left the case drain line in a bucket to test the unit before getting more permanent with things. The case drain line had very minimal fluid coming out until I set the auger in the ground. As soon as the auger got fully into the dirt (about 4 inches) the auger stopped spinning and the case drain line discharging fully, albeit at low pressure.

Thanks again.

The case drain flow should be there if the motor is running. About 10 to 20 % of the flow.

The auger should not have stopped. If you are using QD's, check them.

What flow is the hyd auger designed for?

What is the GPM's for the aux flow?

Install a hyd gage with a tee at the aux plug, and you will see the pressure and how much.

If the motor is shot you will get excessive flow out the drain port and the motor will slow or stop under load.

Is there some other valving on the auger? Is it possible there is a relief valve that opening and allowing the oil to flow out the drain line?

Just a couple of other ideas.

Some times the hose for the case drain is the same size of the in and out hoses. If so, did you connect the correct hoses?

Do you have pictures of the auger motor showing the ports?

Is the auger motor capable of the pressure generated by the Bobcat aux hyd?
