I've a recently acuired 2 stage hyd pump this is a pic & #'s on casting are 2670017...P-59 it was on a used home built splitter when I got it last week...
is it worth it to have a pump like this rebuilt or better to buy new one ? Or
is this 2 stage pump able to be "self rebuilt with a kit of sorts " ?I've measured the pump housing and it is 5.125" so I'm guessing 11-13 gpm pump any one know what $ to rebuild???
I've acuired these other older pumps too years ago and at different times tried to run the #'s on them without too much luck can anyone educate me about them?

Do you have a reason to think they need rebuilding? Takes a lot of splitting to wear one enuf so it wont work ok.

Have you tried it out to see if it pumps? Prime it and see if it will suck fluid from one bucket into another, or same bucket. You can test it with just about any oil, including motor oil.

The first is a two-stage gear pump, pretty standard in log splitters, they allow low HP engines to perform well for splitter applications......when extenting at low pressure, both gear sections deliver flow quickly......when developing higher pressure (contacting log) a built-in valve directs flow from one section of the pump to the reservoir while the small section of the pump splits the wood......on the return cycle both sections deliver flow for quick return.....

This enables low HP for this reason....if not a 2 stage pump then either you wait forever for the split cycle or use a larger disp pump and stall the engine when higher pressure is evident.......

So even if you have a 11-13 gpm pump the smaller section is much less to provide higher pressure......

The 2 stage gear pump if worn out, needing to be rebuilt.....junk it and by a new one......in order to rebuild you'd have to change more than just seals, you'd need to replace gears, housing, bearings ect.....Not going to find replacement parts for these as they are intended for replacement only

The round older Vickers Vane Pump (left side of the second pic) is a fixed displacement vane pump......it won't give you the same results as 2 stage....even if the disp was 11-13 gpm's you'd have to up the HP on your engine to compensate for added gpm's or the engine would stall.....

the gear pump on right hand (engine mounted) has the same problem as vane pump, fixed disp.......

Hope this helps:)

yes that helps Thank you... guys. the 2 stage one.. pumps but it leaks oil around the shaft and melted/ate the BUNA-N INSERT fairly fast.I ordered a 16gpm for its replacement today..
As for the the other pumps...when would a vane pump be used vs a gear pump? I'm going to put a dump bed & plow set up on the truck pictured and I dont know enough about vane pumps yet to descide which way to go to install a hydraulic system in it.

They both would work....the vane pump is more suited to continuous duty,higher pressures, needs cleaner oil, quieter operation, more expensive to buy, easier to rebuild......that's why industrial use is it's original intent...

Gear pump can handle dirtier oil, intermittent use, cheaper to buy, more costly to rebuild/restore.......more suited for dump hoist and mobile equip.....

Both can be used as positive displacement pumps....

Rotation at the input shaft needs to be a concern......vane pumps=easier to reverse rotation......gear pump= some inexpensive ones cannot be reverse without replacing front cover.......

Check alignment with a straight edge.....the 2 stage pump, do not take it apart, the only hope to reseal the shaft is to pull it with sheetrock screws and search one out locally......if you pull pump apart you'll lose the close tolerances internally and it won't build pressure......

From "Pump School" - an education in fluid handling It's worth the read.

Advantages of a vane pump:

* Handles thin liquids at relatively higher pressures
* Compensates for wear through vane extension
* Sometimes preferred for solvents, LPG
* Can run dry for short periods
* Can have one seal or stuffing box
* Develops good vacuum

Disadvantages of a vane pump:

* Can have two stuffing boxes
* Complex housing and many parts
* Not suitable for high pressures
* Not suitable for high viscosity
* Not good with abrasives

Vane pump applications:

* Aerosol and Propellants
* Aviation Service - Fuel Transfer, Deicing
* Auto Industry - Fuels, Lubes, Refrigeration Coolants
* Bulk Transfer of LPG and NH3
* LPG Cylinder Filling
* Alcohols
* Refrigeration - Freons, Ammonia
* Solvents
* Aqueous solutions

Advantages of a gear pump:

* High speed
* High pressure
* No overhung bearing loads
* Relatively quiet operation
* Design accommodates wide variety of materials

Disadvantages of a gear pump:

* Four bushings in liquid area
* No solids allowed
* Fixed End Clearances

Gear pump applications:

Common external gear pump applications include, but are not limited to:

* Various fuel oils and lube oils
* Chemical additive and polymer metering
* Chemical mixing and blending (double pump)
* Industrial and mobile hydraulic applications (log splitters, lifts, etc.)
* Acids and caustic (stainless steel or composite construction)
* Low volume transfer or application
