I am looking to buy a zero turn mower for my property (3 + acres...hills)...I have narrowed the mowers down to a SCAG Tiger Cat (23 Kohler 48 deck) and a Hustler Superduty Fastrack (26 Kaw 60 deck)....Both are about the same price....Any advice?

SCAG seems built like a tank....Hustler offers KAW engine which seems to be prefered engine on zero turns...

I don't know a thing about the scag but I bought a Hustler Super Z a few weeks ago and it is the best cutting machine I've ever been on. 31 kaw with a 66" deck. Top speed is 15 mph which is too fast to mow but I've mowed at 6-8 mph and it does a great job. I put the flex forks on the front and it rides smooth as silk over some really rough ground. Cut my mowing time in half and it's more fun. From what I read Zero turns are not really great on hills. From my limited experience the super Z does just fine on hills but its equipped with with larger pumps and wheel motors to give it the top speed it has. I compared only with a JD zero turn and the ride on the hustler was much better

Both good manufacturers, I ended up with Scag Wildcat which I am very happy with it. I didn't feel the Tiger Cat would meet my needs, I mow considerably more acreage. It is clearly not has heavy duty as the Wildcat, but of course costs less. I liked all of the Hustler units, but the main reason I picked Scag was the dealer was a little closer and I liked them better than than the Hustler dealer. I read review after review and there were some that complain about quality of cut with the Hustler, which also affected my decision. However it seems that now that I have Scag, the Hustler owners all love their machines.

I think you need to demo both, and carefully look at features between the two. Seems like one thing I didn't like about the Tiger Cub was a cable system that raised the deck, whereas the Wildcat has a nice spring assist lift, no cables involved.

Scags are built very well in my opinion, i abuse mine and with the exception of a safety switch no problems. I have the Kawi on mine and am really happy with it. I never personally liked Kohlers. I am a scag believer, but in this case i would prob get the Hustler just for the motor. If you have a chance, try a Exmark, they cut really nice.

The differance between a 48 & 60"is big in reality when mowing 3 acres, you might allready no this..The Kawi & 60"deck would seal the deal for me as hustler also has a good rept. I use a close to 1500 lbs Cub Tank w/ a 37hp Kawasaki & 72" deck, the differance between it & my 48 is night & day & I can only mow at 6mph max because of rough terrain, don't worry about the hills. ZTR's are extremely versital & just go up & down directly doing 180's top & bottom If front end washes going around a tree etc on the hill you will figure out a way to get it done. I mow 4 acers w/over major tree's to spin around.

One of the mowers I run is a 60" Hustler Super Z with a 27 hp Kohler. It is a fantastic machine, and I would recommend it highly. I know the Super Z is more money than the Fastrack, but it has the suspension seat, larger wheel motors, and is very stable on slopes. If you were to spend the extra money up front, you would be very happy with the performance, and on 3 acres it should be the last mower you need to buy.
