hello, i was just given a Husky 235 from a friend and when i used it, it seemed to bog down a little. didnt have the power i was expecting. although i wont be a heavy user, will be used occasionly for firewood, trimming, clean ups. ive heard some talks on muffler mods but cant locate and specifics. would a local retailer beable to do this, something i can do myself? any one have any advise on modifying this Model?

First things first. A sharp chain. Next thing a clean air filter. Next thing a clean not badly worn bar. Clean oil passage in the bar and good high enough octane gas after that. Muffler mods are fairly easy if you can get them off the head without snapping bolts off. See if the spark arrestor is clean. If the muffler comes apart open it up and look for debris inside. If you can drill the baffle plate without puncturing the arrestor screen that will help. Not too many holes!

That is the little poulan built saw for husky. Carb settings sound off and usually are from factory from what I have noticed. Muffler mod with carb retuned they cut good enough for homeowner duties. I had a poulan version on trade in and got to wring it out to test. :p

Should be a silver muffler and they dont come apart unless you uncrimp the halves. I cant remember if the husky ones were silver or not. :confused3:

Also make sure of all the above that TM stated.

thanks for the input, i will try some of these and let you know.

since this being my first saw i have just learned to disengage the brake before taking off the cover, and the chain tensioner on this model sucks because the plastic gear teeth have stripped and had to order replacement... also, got to to let the thing run full throttle before attempting to cut anything or else it will bog down... sure glad i didnt buy this saw!!

Do the checks treemonkey suggested, but before you drill anything, run it when you put it together, warm it up for 10 minutes of so, then adjust the carb, also be sure ya have fresh high octane with a 50:1 mix.
If that doesn't work, try removing the spark arrester screen, only if I did not see any improvments after doing this would I drill the exhaust.
It sounds like ya have drag, carb is out of adjstment,or poor fuel, or all the above

435 is a better saw. But the 545 is way better than both! Best to learn the diffs between the models.

Replacing the muffler will not help. Must be running too rich? Need to fix the problem, tune carb, etc...
You can also remove the spark screen.
