>>>>Humvees offered up far better protection to its occupants compared to the open air jeeps they replaced. In the same way that AM General improved the light tactical vehicle by adding a roof and doors, Oshkosh does the same by baking a base-level of armor into each JLTV. Utilizing lessons learned on its M-ATV MRAP (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle) program, the JLTV features a V-shaped hull to deflect blasts from below, bulletproof windows, and an armored crew capsule. Compared to an up-armored Humvee, a basic JLTV offers multiple orders of magnitude more protection from bullets and bombs to its occupants. Each JLTV is also capable of being fitted with a "B-Kit" of armor, boosting protection to MRAP-levels of protection.<<<<<

At $400,000 a pop, it better be good.

So, the only thing carried over from the Silverado is the Duramax, but the vehicle itself is an armoured car, not a jeep actually.

Like many countries that took part in missions in IED ridden countries, they are replacing jeeps with armoured patrol vehicles.

The Dutch army instantly bought 25 Australian made Bushmaster 4x4 armoured vehicles when the unprotected Mercedes G wagons showed extremely vulnerable, but yet again the Bushmaster protection against IED's and armour piercing 7.62mm caliber proved unsatisfactory: The army announced lately that they switch the tactical roles of the Bushmaster and the joint Dutch/German Boxer, to get more armour to the front line and keep the Bushmaster a bit further back, in command post and radio roles.

The wars in the Middle East have changed military doctrine, and vehicle demands quite a bit in the last two decades.

Hopefully the engines are designed to last longer than the new 3.0 Duramax, GM says its good for 150,000 miles.

When we first armored up our Hummers it was very crude. We called it ghetto armor. Had the Engineers next to us cut flat plate and fasten it everywhere we could. Cut slots in the window panels to see thru. Piled sandbags in the floorboards and on the doghouse. Completely bottomed out the suspension. Taxed the powertrain to the limit.

18 months later when back for second tour the V hulled rigs were doing a lot of the "frontline duty". I've got a couple pics of how they are able to handle a sizeable IED.

As mentioned, Adapt and Overcome.

I had a job driving hummers out to the retrofit factory at AM General in South Bend back in the 80's. They'd build them in Mishawaka, and take them over to South Bend for retrofit for weapons platforms, ambulances, etc... We'd drive them to railroad spurs around northern Indiana, load them up, chain them down, and ship them off. They weren't built with armor intended. The weight almost doubled when they were armored. They served their purpose when built, but the proliferation of IEDs weren't a considered factor when they were designed, in my opinion.

True, they were designed with army against army warfare in mind, with a front line where the fighting was.

The wars in iraq and afghanistan were a new kind of war, not against another army but against insurgents that hid among the population, mostly without a front line, with possible enemy fire and IED's from everywhere, and territory was never conquered i.e. safe.

My pal's brother did his tour in Afghanistan. He still picks a seat with the back against the wall, facing the door, so he can oversee the room even though its 4 years ago. Its a survival habit he subconsciously still does.

I learned that in Los Angeles airport in 1972 coming home from Vietnam. Taught to me by Hippie freak nobodies that wouldn't have lasted a week where I'd been.

Still practice it today. It's called Situational Awareness.
