HST FAN

GOT MY BX23 IN DEC AND AM VERY PLEASED WITH IT IN 52 HRS. HAD AN ANGRY LIMB BOUNCE UP AND TAKE OUT ALL THE HST FAN BLADES. AM I DEAD IN THE WATER UNTIL I GET A REPLACEMENT OR CAN I USE IT DOING LIGHT WORK UNTIL THE FAN ARRIVES?
ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM, ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR A GUARD OF SOME KIND?

There have been threads about this in the past...don't have pointers to them, but if you use the search function I think you will be able to find them.

There was even one that had some photos showing how one member here changed the fan from above I believe.

I had the same misfortune with mine, and I continued using the tractor till my fan came in, although I didn't use it for anything strenuous enough to heat up the hydro. I replaced mine from the underside, then some others have removed the floor and replaced the fan from the top. Here's a link to the solution to the errant sticks and twigs.

Wouldn't that plate make her run hot?
I am a big "fan" of guarding that HST fan, I am on my fourth one, and the last time it happened, you could have heard the expletive two states away. All the blades sheared off in about two seconds.
And the cruise control on my BX2000 makes it all the more unpleasant to install. Bad design IMHO. Perhaps a screen instead?

That fan does not blow a lot of air and what it does it just blows on the transmission housing. It does not do a whole lot of cooling. Not like it was blowing threw a radiator or cooler of some sort. I would not be afraid to use it for normal stuff with out the fan.

You might not think that it does much cooling, but I have known people that have burned up transmissions on Bolens tractors when they lost the blades to the fan. The Bolens uses a identical method of cooling the hydrostatic transmission, but unlike the Kubota, the Bolens fans are no longer available. Two things happen to these fans..... 1) they get hit by sticks and break off...... 2) they get brittle with age and just break from vibrations.... this is the general problem with the Bolens.. after 20+ years, they are all so brittle now that the blades just fall off. They also have a tendency to collect dirt on the blades after prolong use and this dirt causes them to be off balance and cause subtle vibrations.

I had the same thing happen to me on my '22. If you plan to fix it yourself, the work requires removing the floorpan, assorted hardware and the connecting shaft. It took me about 4-5 hours for remove and replace. I did not put a shield in, but I try to be a bit more careful about which branches I drive over.
