Or wouldn't you ? I acquired this blade and used it on a SSQA plow I built last winter. The plan was to refinish it when plow season was over. It looks like it was used as a dozer blade and is also pitted but smoothed off. I don't care to much about the final looks but would like the snow to slide on it better and not stick. What do I need to do to accomplish that ? I know I could re-skin it but might look for a better plow before I go that far. I am hoping someone will say spay it with fluid film and forget it because I hate to paint and not good at it. :)

Well - I would give it a good sanding first. Then raise it up - get an appropriate roller - roll on a couple coats of high gloss exterior water based enamel paint. Something other than that rusty surface will make the snow roll off better.

What do you want to achieve? The worst part is the damage and that would take body work. You could sandblast the thing, paint it, and it would still look like heck. Heck, maybe worse, when painted. The damage, that is. Curious, why someone beat on it.

I have one even worse. A V blade, twisted and the cylinders have punched out through the blade. I am not going to spend any time on it. Weld it as a V onto a JD 640 Loader mount and call it a day. Use it when I need a V blade on the tractor. Some things are not worth spending time, money and energy on.

From a looks standpoint I wouldn't do anything.

If you want to help with the snow sticking to it you might get a quote on having it sprayed with a bed liner material. I did that years ago on my ATV blade, made a world of difference on how much the snow stuck to it and how much effort it took to push through deep snow. The bed liner can be sprayed so it has a rough texture or a smooth texture, have them spray it smooth for obvious reasons.

I can't tell in the picture if the cutting edge sticks above the rest of the blade or if it sits below. If it sticks above, then spray the bed liner right up to the top of the cutting edge so it keeps snow from working its way under the bed liner to peel it off. If the cutting edge is below then it may not be a good idea as the snow might peel off the bed liner.

Brush some OSPHRO rust reformer on, go to tractor supply and get some implement paint and roll a couple layers on. You will probably get more dents in anyway but should stay decent looking for 5 years.

Mine wasn't quite that bad but a couple spray cans of Rustolium made it much slicker and preserves it.

OK thanks all. So it is basically the same as any rusty surface that wants a gloss finish with brush or roll on better than spray on. For some reason I thought there was a special procedure and paint for snow plows. I guess anything would make that one better.

We've been using Pittsburgh AUE coatings on different things for the past few years. It's a 2-part "Direct To Metal" finish. It has held up well. To name a few: flagpole, trailer, snowblower, Reading utility body, scraper blade. The only place it wore away is inside the blower housing in the snowblower. Can't fault it there with the stones it's been exposed to. I plan to use it on the 7-1/2' RFM I'm restoring.

AUE? Is this a PPG product?
