For those of you that are trying to figure out how to do a lot of things with your tractor and otherwise (aren't we all), there is a surprising amount of good information in Army Field Manuals that can be downloaded without restriction from the General Dennis J. Reimer Training and Doctrine Digital Library, http://www.adtdl.army.mil/cgi-bin/atdl.dll?type=fm&header=/atdl/browse/fm.htm

These manuals have some of the best no-nonsense information t I have been able to find, and they are free to download (or you can pay for hard copies). Those of particular relevance to this group are:

FM 5-33 Terrain Analysis, 11 Jul 1990 , Ch 1, 8 Sep 92
FM 5-125 Rigging Techniques, Procedures, And Applications, 03 Oct 1995 (Includes information on chains and hooks as well as ropes and cables)
FM 5-134 Pile Construction, 18 Apr 1985
FM 5-212 Medium Girder Bridge, 07 Feb 1989
FM 5-232 Topographic Surveying, 27 Sep 1989 , Change 1, 29 May 90
FM 5-233 Construction Surveying, 04 Jan 1985
FM 5-410 Military Soils Engineering, 23 Dec 1992 , Change 1, 4 Jun 97 (Includes information on building roads on a variety of soil conditions)
FM 5-420 Plumbing And Pipefitting, 07 May 1993
FM 5-426 Carpentry, 03 Oct 1995
FM 5-428 Concrete And Masonry, 18 Jun 1998
FM 5-430-00-1 Planning And Design Of Roads, Airfields, And Heliports In The Theater Of Operations - Road Design, 26 Aug 1994
FM 5-430-00-2 Planning And Design Of Roads, Airfields, And Heliports In The Theater Of Operations - Airfield And Heliport Design, 29 Sep 1994
FM 5-434 Earthmoving Operations, 15 Jun 2000
FM 5-436 Paving And Surfacing Operations, 28 Apr 2000
FM 5-484 Multiservice Procedures For Well-Drilling Operations, 08 Mar 1994
FM 5-499 Hydraulics, 01 Aug 1997

Glad you guys like it. I have picked up a lot of very useful information from this sight that will make my life a lot easier when I finally get around to buying a tractor. The least i can do is share what little I know.

I shouldn't have restricted my post to field manuals; there are other areas that are useful as well. You might be better off bookmarking the search page http://www.adtdl.army.mil/root/cgisearch.htm

Under "Training Circulars" you will find TC 9-237 Operator's Circular, Welding Theory and Application, 07 May 1993

"Circular" is somewhat misleading since this document is several hundred pages long.

Warning to all, Army docs are predicated on successfull completion of your project, only IF you do it by the numbers! Those of you with previous military background know what I am saying, there are three ways of doing everything....the correct way, the wrong way, and the ARMY WAY. That said, have fun!

Scruffy, I would never subject my Wife and children to the Army way....except when I have them fall out for police call.

ErnieB, I don't blame you at all! Maybe THAT's why I hit every rank through E-6 twice! Don't like absolutes, and when I readily know an easier way to do something, being basically lazy, I'll use the easier and more productive method. Military don't like that individuality! Shoot, in our house, my wife is the Spouse, and I've always been known as the louse. Never did figure out how she got that one started, but being I like her cooking, I never argued.

P.S. - There are some informative documents in there though, I downloaded them to a CD, and hopefully can convince my son to take a look and learn something.<P ID="edit"><FONT SIZE=-1>Edited by scruffy on 11/17/00 02:50 PM.</FONT></P>
