Total deaths are about 2,500,000 /year in US

Of which
443000 attributed to smoking - CDC
98000 to medical errors - IOM
300000 to obesity - surgeon general
34000 to motor vehicle accident - census bureau
26000 to unintentional falls - CDC
33000 to unintentional poisoning - CDC
38000 to suicide - CDC

8600 from firearms use (murder) of which 323 are from rifles.
(736 from hands, feet)

So I figure we can save nearly 1/2 of those who die every year by banning smoking, obesity, doctors, poison, and high places.

Who wouldn't want to save nearly 1,000,000 people a year.

Or are statistics deceiving??

Forgot the latest statistic.
70,000 deaths from air pollution in the US. (so we also need to ban cars and smokestacks)

We cannot feed the number of people we have now ,if you want to save a million more each year where will the food come from ? We live in a throw away society and farms are being lost daily to be replaced by consumers in over priced homes ! When the consumers out pace the producers who will you feed ? And how ?

Save them for what purpose? The Earth is already being consumed by 7,000,000,000 so the fewer humans there are the better!

33000 to unintentional poisoning - CDC

That one is odd.

Spent a minute or two googling. Unintentional poisoning is not Aunt Trudy confusing arsenic with her BC powders but accidental death from medicines. The CDC report I found was linking these deaths to pain killers like Oxycodone. I read awhile back that the FDA was going to move some of these pain killers into a different drug schedule to try to limit their use because of the illegal use of these drugs and the increase in deaths.

What was interesting was that the increase in unintentional poisoning deaths in rural states. The CDC was tagging rural states with a higher rate but rural could be where 20-34% of the state population was in a rural area which does not sound very rural to me. The other classification of 35-62% the people being in a rural area makes more sense. Sorta. Course, that does not say that a majority of the deaths were IN rural areas. But if you just look at their map and rate increases, the deaths are in rural states. There was a news story this week or last about the prescription pain pill abuse leading to at least one break in a day in Fayetteville, NC which is hardly a rural area. Supposedly the problem in Fayetteville is because of the large veteran and service member population who are prescribed pain meds. The article said some of these drugs are going for a $1 a milligram and one veteran was selling his pain pills for $1,000 a month!

Of course with this much use, there are going to be unintentional poisonings.

Later,
Dan

"If we save even one life from gun violence, it's worth it. Tell Congress: ..." - From Obama twitter feed.
I figure 1,000,000 saves has got to be more important :)
(or is this incredible effort to protect us from any harm silly)

Save them from what? Death? Pretty sure that no matter what laws the pickerwoods in DC pass the odds of death are still 100%

We live longer than ever before, live better than ever before, and everyone wants to strip my liberties to protect me from myself.

^^^ What he said. You can't prevent deaths, you only extend lives for a while. Living is fatal and there is NO chance of changing that.
