Stupidly, I forgot to reattach the 3 point arms when I detatched an implement. The threaded rod that holds up the arm got bent backwards when I was backing the tractor into the shed. I can't figure out how it put pressure on the case, but somehow, it cracked all the way across. IMG_0527.JPGIMG_0527.JPG

Is this something that can be welded? Hopefully welded in place? If not, is it a replacement that I can do my self?

From the diagrams that I can find and what I can see, it seems that there is a gasket that runs around a portion of the lower case, Can the lower portion of the transmission be removed and replaced without dropping the whole thing?

I would like to know if this is something that I can fix, or is it big deal?

Thank you.

cracked cases can seldom be repaired in place.
The photos do a good job of showing a crack, but fail to isolate the location and the effected component.

A mention of your tractor model would help also.

Hard to tell if it is a big deal or not. Did fluid leak out?

It is a Kubota BX1500 and the shot was the best I could get with me on my back pointing from slightly in front of the rear axle pointing back. Yes, all of the fluid leaked out.

Thanks

OK then

You are screwed! ;-0

When vital juices exit the assembly, in-situ repairs are seldom an option. Not with a crack like that!

I second that note your screwed.....
cast Iron as a whole unit can be welded but it has to be completely clean all oils have to be flashed off with a torch completely the entire unit has to be heated to 400-500 degrees then temp checked with a infrared device.
in the old days we had cast iron welding rods the two broken halves have to be super clean and 400 degrees to weld while clamped together then a bead is drawn across the 400 degree surface slag chipped and examined.

the entire weld then has to be carefully sandbagged and brought down to room temperature (so the bag sand has to be preheated to 300 degrees) in a special non flammable sock.
the tube sand is laid across the weld......and slowly brought down to room temp
or the unit if small enough can be placed in a oven and brought down over 2-3 hours.

after it at room temp and wire wheeled for slag.....you can drip diesel across the weld interior and look for stains on the other side
re-weld if necessary.

its usually a 8 hour process.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but that's real bad. Like really really bad. Like mentioned, the level of clean it needs to be for a proper weld and then the cool down will be an interesting task. Do you have insurance on it? Worst case is maybe you can go tractor shopping. The dishonest thing would be to fill the crack with jbweld, and trade it off but karma has a funny way of coming back and getting people who do things like that.

It's an aluminum case, can be welded but the time to disassemble/reassemble and if you pay somone else to weld it would probably be best to just replace.
I'm still not sure how it got cracked like that? My dad has a bx1500, tough little machine.

I've repaired a transmission case on a large truck before that was cracked, did it on the truck, wasn't fun and was fighting contamination the whole time but the company was happy, saved them thousands of dollars.

Not with the NaySayers here. Cast Iron CAN be successfully welded but not by the timid. With the proper materials and techniques it can be a 100% fix.

If it aluminum, no problem at all. BUT if all this labor means paying someone to do all this, then it time to look for a salvage tractor part.

The case is aluminum, if you have the ability to weld it it would be a worthwhile repair.

I found a picture of the trans case I repaired awhile back, it was tough access and kept finding more cracks to drill and weld as I went.

This was on a trash truck that had the hydraulic pump pto u-joint come apart and smack the trans case.
Drained fluid, cleaned with acetone, torched with propane to burn off what I could. Still drew fluid into the weld at times but it held, not pretty due to fighting the fluid and limited access.
