How to lift tailgate/ramp?

I just acquired a 6' x 10' single axle trailer for carrying my EZ-GO WorkHorse and hauling about the place. Save me using the longer trailer. Because of my bad knees and back I am looking for ideas on how to gain assistance in lowering and raising the tailgate/ramp.

Has anybody used a boat trailer winch or something similar to do this?

Ideas, comments and pictures, please.

I do have a small AC/DC stick welder although I have not used it in a while.

I've been needing to dig into the same thing. Selling my 5' x 10' trailer to my Stepdad for cheap, but he just had disk surgery and the gate weighs a solid 80# just to lift. I could trim some of the weight off (weld-ins under cheese grate to support tractor wheels), but still need to put some type of asssitance on there.

I'd sure love to hear from someone that has used a particular product and likes it.

There are several, if you search here through posts I have put pictures of my home made ones, that adressed what I felt were issues with the store bought ones.

Backsavers and Gorrilla lifts are two that pop into mind.

Well worth the time and money in my opinion.

I made my own lift with garage door springs inside exhaust pipe. Garage door rollers at the back. Bear in mind, my trailer has a very heavy rampgate to handle an 8,000# tractor. Also has factory coil torsion spings on the pivot pins. Besides using the metal tubing there is a saftey cable inside the spring.

Northern Tool has spring assists that will bolt on your trailer to help lift the gate. Dont know how to post the link but their part number is 40101042G. Look at Northerntool.com for gorilla lift.

I have the elegators (2 of them). My trailer has 6x8 foot mesh split gates with built in equipment ramps (extremely heavy...like 400 lbs plus). I now leave both gates latched together and can lower/lift with ease due to the elegators. I would recommend them in a heart beat.

This install was a necessity last year due to triple hernia surgery. Now I don't have to worry (for myself or my wife) getting cracked in the head by unforgiving steel.

Sounds like you need a helper with that, don't be shy, I'm up in the years also

We just put one of the Gorilla Lifts (from Northern) on one of our 12' FB trailers. It's pretty unbelievable how well it works. The gate went from borderline 2 person raising to literally one finger. We should have done it long ago...

The gorilla's are nice, but I'm constantly loading over the sides and didn't want to chance ripping off any horizontally mounted gate assists.
