Just had the house in Va inspected for Termites with my local Paramount.
As usual they couldn't find anything. But the doofus pointed out some white streaks on an exposed joist and proceeded to lecture me on the dangers of white mold, how they could treat it, when they could treat it with "special chemicals" etc.
I got sick of his talking and told him I've got a certified Pesticide Applicators license and can buy most any chemicals he could at DoMyOwn.com.
Shut him up.
But later I got to thinking about, what do TBN'ers use for minor mold on wood in the house?
I've used vinegar, drying and bleach - worked
I've used TSP - worked
Are there others that work better?
Oh, and the "mold" he saw was white paint from a previous project.

Concrobium is a mix of washing soda (sodium carbonate) and TSP (trisodium phosphate).

This area had bad floods months ago which led to a lot of wet basements. I was lucky but a lot of people weren't. My daughters place got wet and she used this stuff, Swish Quatto 44 and I must say it worked great. I gave some to a friend of mine who was trying to stop mold with bleach with no luck, she said this worked awesome.

Found what someone claims to be an excellent substitute for Concrobium:

Remove and Prevent Mildew for Pennies

1 formula for those that can't follow links:
DIY Concrobium knock-off formula:

  • 1 quart hot water
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda (sodium bicarbonate)
  • 2 tablespoons washing soda (sodium carbonate)
  • 2 tablespoons TSP (trisodium phosphate)
@daugen would probably know all about this.

If I am removing mildew for painting preparation, I use bleach plus TSP (preferred) and /or washing soda. However, it is very corrosive, so I think that protective equipment is vital, especially skin and eyewear protection.

Mildew is hard to kill, and can grow under paints, especially those without fungicides in them. In general, prevention via dehumidification is better than doing cleanup more than once.

The Swish Quatto 44, per their SDS, appears to be washing soda with some specialized detergents that generally have good anti-microbial and antiviral properties. Certainly would seem to be easier to handle that TSP and bleach.

I once had an inspector mistakenly a white residue on some beams as dry rot mold. It wasn't. It was just dry hard water deposits from a dishwasher that leaked a decade earlier. Inspectors come in all levels of competence in my experience, and the job itself requires such a broad range of expertise that I think it isn't trivial.

All the best,

Peter

First - gotta get rid of the cause, like No Trespassing said. Better ventilation and some form of dehumidifier.

Then - one of the chemicals recommended here.

My house footings are poured on solid basaltic lava bedrock. I have a very small stream of water that flows across the bedrock. Comes in on one corner of the footings - all the way across the basement - out the other side. I have a very happy family of small green frogs that live in the basement. Absolutely no spiders in my basement.

Anyhow - I have plenty of flow thru ventilation in the basement. 43+ years and no mold.

Country living at its finest.

I recently noticed there is a moderate amount of fuzzy grey mold growing in the exposed rafters in my basement. The house is old and the basement is unfinished with exposed rough stone masonry foundation, and is mildly damp in general. I plan to start using the basement as a woodworking workshop, so I'll be spending long hours down there and would rather have the mold gone. I showed the mold to the landlord but he seemed unconcerned about it, but said if it concerns me that I can spray it with bleach and it should kill most of it. I saw elsewhere that scrubbing it with a water borax solution should also work. I scrubbed a few of the rafters with the water/borax last night, but the water just splashed everywhere, making a rather big mess. I'm thinking about getting some bleach and a spray bottle to spray the rest of it. Anyone have any better recommendations?
