Problem: keeping rocky hillside cleared so I can view rock-bottom creek. Slope 15 to 25 degrees.
I have removed 80 fallen trees and cut out 45 or so more to allow access by tractor (and had the stumps ground down). Have removed several dump truck loads of rocks but this place is named "Sand Mtn." for a reason, so there will always be more rocks coming up or breaking loose.
Regular rotary cutter will NOT work--too many rocks plus I want smoother walking surface than the sharp privet stumps a rotary cutter leaves.
Possible solution: rotary cutter with chains for blades. Have tried this and it works reasonably well, (sandstone rocks just explode back to sand) but it is definitely a "homemade" solution and I have thus far found no guidance for design. Anybody out there tried this?
Another possible solution is a flail mower but I have never used one. Will these things even handle uneven terrain and rocks? Alamo's web site is poor as far as specs and HP requirements and optional cutter bars.
Anyone have any experience with using a flail on rocky ground? (Most of discussion I have read is worried about finish cut look or speed.)
Or does anyone have a better idea? Thanks for your opinions.
Tractor will most likely be a JD 3720.

Very carefully.

We just moved on to a new place last fall. Our old farm was covered with rocl outcroppings, rock lined creek, and just plain ol' rocks in the field. It had to be mowed. Some of it wasn't so bad. Some was. I did about 90% of the rocky parts with a bush hog. It had to be held up off the rocks and moved along slowly. Nerve racking to say the very least. Areas I couldn't mow were hit with weedeater or round-up.

Our new place has a creek through it. The banks are strewn with rock. I still mow it too. It ain't for everyone, that's for sure. Good thing is, most of our new place is deep, rich topsoil.

Mowing rocky hillsides is basically "any way you can get the job done safely", with no shortcuts or easy way.

How big an area is this?
rox: not so big (about 200 ft. by 600 ft.) but too big for a weedeater. Originally cleared with a little of everything (chainsaw, bush hog, weedeater with blade, backhoe, etc.) Then used a DR mower for awhile, but knees will no longer tolerate that. Tried a Swisher tow-behind my ATV but slope too steep for Swisher. I need a solution I can use from the comfort of an A/C cab.
Farmwithjunk: know what you mean about nerve racking. It is too steep for me to feel safe doing anything but straight up and down. Then you hit a stump hole and are sideways in a flash.
Thanks for the replies.
