Tractor
Massey 1643
I apologize but I don't know any other way to ask. I have been looking at tractors for the past three months. I have been all over this forum. I have been to dealers and looked at kubota, kioti, mahindra, new holland, john deere, massey, and case. One of my local kubota/massey dealers has a 1533 that I keep getting drawn back to. Its brand new 2012 and has a DL 120 loader with a 66" QA bucket and he wants $18,500 for it which I think is a very good price. I am just not knowledgable enough about tractors to know what 33hp and 26 pto hp is capable of. I would like to look at a 1643 but the closet one to me is 195 miles away and its also $4500 more in price. Would the $4500 be worth the extra 10hp on the tractor and pto?

I am contemplating doing some large scale gardening---from 2 to 12 acres.

Will the 1533 pull a:

2 blade bottom plow?
6' harrow?
6' tiller?
6' box blade?
9" auger?
I am also looking at an implement that will lay a bed with plastic and drip irrigation lines---the manufactorer says from 30 to 35 hp to pull this implement.
occasionally a 5' rotary mower?

Will the 1533 be ok with these implements or will it be approaching the max load on the tractor for any of them?

The 1533 should handle them. The 1643 would handle them with ease. The 1643 has more weight then the 1533 and you never know when you might need more power.

I own a 2012 MF 1533, and I can tell you in real world capabilities, it is strong enough for what you want to do. The only time I've wished for more hp is when I'm bush hogging in really deep, thick grass. Everything else it has performed beyond my expectations. Now I'm considering a larger tractor, because I have acquired a 25 acre pasture since buying my 1533, and would like to start cutting it for hay, and the 1533 is on the edge of running a small round baler (from what I'm told). But everything you have listed, the 1533 will have no problem handling.

How much you want for the 1540? Is it a Power Shuttle or Syncro? Thanks.

It's a synchro shuttle. 2012 with about 250 hours. I would need 20k out of it, to be honest I am not sure what it's worth.

I went with the 1643 and am very pleased with it.

The 1643 will also offer a couple better features I believe... including the linked auto throttle foot pedal.

$4500 is a lot of money, but I think it's better to have the bigger tractor and not need it, than need it and not have it.

But keep in mind, the loaders will be the same. If you jump to a 1648 you get a much stronger loader ... But it's also a big price jump too.

As for the implements you mentioned, the only ones that would concern me with the 1533 are the tiller (5' would probably be better sized), and the 2 bottom plow (might be too much). A 6' brushog will also be right on the edge of too big.

I had a 2007 1540 Powershuttle with a loader and now have a 2013 1643 Hydro with a loader. For loader work, the Hydro is hard to beat, but for virtually every other task, the Powershuttle is superior.

As far as comparing the two tractors themselves (aside from the difference in transmissions), there are some things that are better on the 1643 (headlights, seat, ROPs that doesn't vibrate near your ear, and one-piece hood) and some things that were better on the 1540 (a quieter tractor overall, better on fuel (both might be as a result of the transmissions, however), and the loader joystick was better than the new one on the 1600 series).

Again, since we use the 1643 more for the loader than as a "puller," the Hydro works well, but I really do miss that Powershuttle.

I also think that my old 1540 would out-pull this new 1643 Hydro.
