How much to ask for a Ford 4000?

I'm looking to sell a 1980 Ford 4000 with a Bush-hog FEL.
The hours meter doesn't work, so I don't know how many hours are on it. I've had it about six years and I've put maybe 1500 hours on it.
It runs great, but the little things are starting to wear out and the maintenance is nickel and dime-ing me to distraction. I have a full time job and don't have the time to repair some little problem every time I need to use the tractor. Plus, I'd really like to get a 4WD, cuz I have some real soft spots on my property.
When I sell it, I'll have enough money to buy a new tractor.
I was thinking of asking about $7500. Does this sound reasonable? (I live in rural South Mississippi).

Hmm... a 25 yr-old tractor with 2WD and a loader. Also you are in a rural area. Will the 3PH lift a round bale? It should with the loader on for counterbalance. My personal opinion is that you will be hard-pressed to find someone to offer even $6,000 for your tractor. I think $7,500 is a price for a 4WD in top condition considering its age.

IF, the tractor is in good physical shape and the tires are well the $7500 would not be unreasonable at all. Heck I have sold a Ford 2000 with no FEL for around $7000, and sell MF135's for $7000 all the time. Of course we are in Georgia so that might make a little difference. For that size tractor in good shape, especially with a FEL $7500 might actaully be low. Good luck.

The first thing you should do is accurately describe it. There were no 4000's built after about May of 1975. If it needs work it would not bring $7500 in my area. And I bet tractors bring more in the Northeast than in the Deep South. I bought a '71 4000 gas with a 735 Ford loader for $4900 that I put $1000 worth of "nickel-dime" stuff in the first year.

Another thing that might hurt its value is if it has the Select O Speed tranny. I had a 4000 with that tranny and it worked great but anyone who saw it started cussing from its early reputation. I do agree with your price though, I paid $3000 for mine with Ford loader but the power steering didn't work and the hydraulics needed some attention. I kept it for about 2 months then traded it in on a TN and they actually gave me $4000 trade for it. Then sold the loader off and auctioned the tractor. It started great and would fire off as soon as you hit the key.

Okay, a little more data...

Yes, after research, I found out that the 4000 was only made until 73 with a few sold in 74 & 75, so I guess it is an early 70's tractor (30+ yrs).
The engine and body are in excellent shape. The R1 tires have very little wear. With the FEL, the 3PH will lift a round bale. There is a slight leak in the transmission. It starts up every time, hot or cold. I changed the fuel and oil filters, and replaced the fluids after 4 years (2 yrs ago).
It has been converted from a 24 volt system to a 12 volt system. It has an aftermarket power steering set-up and an aftermarket ROPS with a steel canopy.
FELs are real popular in this area, and new ones run around $4000.

That model has a reputation for having problems with certian transmissions amoung our guys. We just had one with a loader that went for $3000.

Yikes. here in fl.. you can have your pick of MF 135's for 3500$ range. I guess i need to start buying them and sending them up to you.. and we can make a tidy profit /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Down here.. a ford 4000 will go for about 4500+/- and with a good fel.. as high as 6500$.

In my area the tractor is going to go for about $5K-$6K by itself, in good condition. The loader will add $1.5K to $2K to the price. If it is in good shape it is worth at least $6500.

Will the 4000 lift a round bale on the 3PH? All day long, and then some. I feed round bales and use a '74 model 4000. The tractor has no weight added to the front end at all, except for the bumper, which weighs next to nothing.

I'd love to find a 4WD utlility with a loader in that size for $7500. Good used 4WD utilities with loaders are rare as hens teeth.
