Just about ready to pull the trigger on a used Pronovost P-inv80 rear pull blower. I thought at first it required 40 to 70 hp tractor, but I just read the specs again and it says "40-70 hp PTO". I've read that the PTO horsepower is lower than the tractor, and can't find the numbers in the manual. Can anyone help?

I see that says 45 hp "Claimed". Not sure how reliable that is. Anyone have experience with blowers care to weigh in on whether the tractor can do the job? Would it just bog down in deep wet snow?

The 45 PTO HP should be pretty reliable. Generally a 12% HP parasitic loss engine HP, mostly due to friction in the driveline as well as ancillary equipment like PS and Hydraulic pumps (+A/C if equipped).

I ran a 74" snowblower on a 26 engine hp JD. The tractor didn't ask for more. It was a geared unit but got the job done.
You will be fine, even if you'd have only 40hp at the PTO.

Sure the weight of the snow in Manitoba is way different than Vermont.
Go ahead and enjoy.

Not a fan of rear pull blowers. Does it make sense to drive over and pack snow w/ the wheels before removing it? If the snow is a foot deep or so, that could be an issue. Pull type seem to function in shallow accumulations. Unless you have 100 hp or more, and 1000 rpm gearbox, snow blowing is a slow and arduous task. A blade is simply faster if used as snow is falling and adequate space available to push the snow out of traffic lane. Plus, w/o a cab, operators WEAR much of the blown snow. My snow blower is only used for substantial drifts. Non-paved surfaces are NOT kind to show blowers. Wide adjustable skid shoes are a must.

rfc143 - you will be OK with that Pronovost unit. For over twenty years I used a 60" blower with a 26 PTO hp tractor. If things get tough - you will just have to take a narrower cut.

BTW - I have a mile long gravel driveway - never had skid shoes on my blower - never had any problems with using the blower on my gravel driveway. I learned how to use it and I used it correctly. VERY, very seldom did I ever blow any dirt or gravel. I've always had an open station tractor and - believe me - you will learn, and quite quickly, which way to point the discharge chute - ha, ha.

When it comes to snowblowers, front or rear mounted, I have found that speed and feed is the key depending upon the conditions at the time. That is, speed of the tractor which determines the amount of snow being fed into the blower.

Most likely why there is a range of PTO HP for any given snowblower, mowers, etc. The lower end of the HP range will get the job done, but not as quick as the upper range.
