How good are UHaul receiver hitches and their instalation

For the moment I have a bumper mounted receiver hitch on my truck and have been wanting to change it over to a frame mounted. It's rated for 3500 pounds I believe. I have went over that and don't like pushing it. There are only four 7/16 inch bolts that hold the bumper onto the truck and that's not very safe in my mind.

My dad has towed a 20 foot enclosed car trailer with the bumper mounted receiver hitch so is it possible ?? Yes should I be doing that all the time ? No. My truck is rated to tow 4800 pounds.

My friend gave me a free frame mounted receiver hitch today. I gladly accepted but it needs more than it's worth. Both the vertical plates are bent, pitted and rusted to where material is missing, and cracked !!! Ouch not worth repairing. The inside of the receiver tube is pitted as well so it's not worth cleaning and welding. I think I am making it into a category one 3 point hitch for my tractor.

So are u haul hitches good? Their hitch mounted on my truck with a lifetime warranty is 165$. The lowest I found at parts stores is 130$. Both are 2 inch receivers with 5000 towing capacity and 500 tongue

That's a good price. I only put on Putnam and Curt hitches and that's my cost.

The U haul hitches are fine.

It is worth checking auto recyclers, aka junk yards, too. The same hitches fit lots of model years, if you want to save a buck.

Around here that's not a option. Rust kills them. I bet I see 2 to 3 broken rusted out hitches per year.

Just not worth the few bucks saved.

Unfortunately I was told the free receiver hitch I was getting from my friend this morning was in good shape. Both verticle mounts are tweaked and cracked!! Not worth the money that it would take to fix. The main tube was pitted and rotting out all inside. Just gone!! Couldn't tell from the outside.

$165 sounds like a decent price for a mounted hitch.

The warranty looks like the real deal!! Only 30$ more than a hitch at autozone

Not sure what year and model your truck is but I have had good luck with products from this site Trailer hitch, hitches and bike rack (800)298-8924. Very easy to install yourself. I bought one from them for my wifes Honda Pilot and my then 16 year old son put it on in about 30 minutes.

I just looked at my old records and I paid U-Haul $210.97, including tax and labor and a ball mount and ball, to install a 5,000# frame mounted hitch on my Ford Ranger on August 21, 2006 (yep, more than 7 years ago). It's actually a Draw-Tite 78165 product.
