So I was looking through Craigslist and I stumbled upon this trailer.
tilt trailer 1.jpgtilt trailer.jpg

I am going to eventually need a dump truck or trailer to do some fill work on my property. At the moment the area that I need to do the work is not accessible by truck. Only 4 wheeler and tractor. My thought would be to make a reasonably beefy dump trailer that I could haul down to the bottom land to do the needed fill work. I feel like trips with a bucket full and a dump trailer would do the job pretty well.

My question to you is. How easy would this trailer above be to make a dump trailer out of? They advertise it as a dump trailer on CR but I feel it is more of a tilt trailer rather than a dump trailer. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Thanks in advance for your help.

It was not built as a tilt or dump trailer. The tongue was made to pivot vertical for storage/shipping. The bolts at the rear of the tongue are removed to do this. Those same bolts that the tongue is pivoted on in the photo are not in line with each other, meaning the tongue side member has to twist to get that position.

Rear of the tongue mounts with bolt 8 in the diagram below.

It could be rebuilt to be a useful trailer that wouldn't eventually break at the tongue pivot.

Around here, they sell for almost the same as a new small dump trailer, which often has higher capacity. A payload of 2250 for the military trailer is about 2/3 yard of gravel.

Unless you have continueing use for the trailer after finishing the project,it might be a waste. Faced with a similar situation with hauling firewood,we built a deckover car hauler we would have use for between wood hauling seasons. Features that vary from conventional car hauler. Low profile 10 ply 14" tires to keep deck low. Hitch interchangeable from pintle for off road tractor and 2"ball for hi-way towing. Instead of stake pockets, hinges with removable pins to alow dropping and removal of sides and rear gate. Dropping sides and rear of loaded trailer alow's fast unload with fel. In addition to conventional tongue jack,a heavly reinforced drop down leg with plow disk foot for use in place of jack when using fel to remove firewood from deck. After chasing trailer in circles, provision was made to insert heavy spike through disk to prevent disk foot from skidding while using fel to remove firewood then dirt later on. Not as quick or neat as a dumper but droping a side or rear work's pretty well to unload sand, dirt and gravel in piles when required. Hope you can visualize it but happy to clearify if asked.

I have an identical trailer I bought for similar plans. I found the trailer structure way really too light for mulch of a dump trailer and it would need a new subframe to make a dump trailer.

I saw that trailer for sale and was very interested. I actually ended up buying the same model from a guy yesterday in Tracy City, because it was closer. Mine is in pretty good shape but doesn't have the wooden sides.

These are awesome little trailers, but as bcp said, they are designed to fold for storage, not dump. He is selling it for a good price though, and I would buy it just as a rugged trailer to have around the farm.

The military trailer shown in post #1 appears to be the dump type. The two handles on the front are to lock the brake on each wheel then backing the trailer will cause it to dump.

Problem is that angle isn't near steep enough to dump material. If one has never used a dump and decide to build one,I highly recommend renting one to see how it's supposed to work. It suprising how high the bed must go before material start's sliding.

And you have to drive forward to dump which isn’t possible without modifying the trailer.

The craigslist trailer show in HawkinsHollow's post #1 above might be a good candidate for adding a winch as shown in this thread from 2013.

I'm still using the trailer with the mod and agree with the "steep enough to dump material" statement in post #7. With the little wheels on the tail end of the trailer, I can pull forward to let the load off and even back up to push the load into the "pile" to some extent.

I have since added a wireless remote control to the winch and had to replace the cable once after six years of use.

Edit: Safety First. Never get under/near a raised load of any type.
