Ok, I know I'm playing the straight man here, but this is my 1st year to try growing corn. I know/knew you were supposed to bunch it up, at least 4 deep, but the available cleared real estate just would not cooperate. So, I've got about 30 feet of corn planted in 2 or 3 rows [the width I had to work with was not constant], about 18 inches apart. It has finally grown what I'd call tassles. What now? Is there anything I can do to promote [ahem] fertilization at this point?

Thanks in advance.

Son, you and me need to have a little talk.... /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I guess it is not obvious to the causual observer.... The tassles drop the pollen onto the emerging silk from the ears and voila.... germination.

The reason that they recommend the four rows is to get the best possible pollenation.

Good luck.

All of the replies here are a little too "corn-y" for me.

(Sorry - couldn't resist!)

I've got a friend that grew up on Kansas. His summer job was to walk around corn field with the top parts , (pollen) and dust the silks. This was in big experimental fields but it does work. Shake that pollen on those tassels. He call it cornography.

Tdog, I'll try to help you a bit. Corn needs cross-pollenation. That's why they say 4 rows are good, but I've put as little as 2 30' rows in, and got good crop. Once the corn plant is growing, I found it better to leave it alone. When the silks are dry on the ends you can pull the ears. I think you will be OK. Good Luck. Kent

The technical term for the dietary problems those poor critters raiding your garden have is a lead deficiency.

I was going to suggest soft music and a little moonlight, but I got out-thunk.

Knuckhead, You got "out-thunk" by deer , rabbits, and groundhogs? And I listened to your advise. Who's the fool here? /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I've tried everything from fences to owls with reflective eyes, and windmills, and not much works. My dog just can't quite get the idea to keep them out. I can't blame her, I'm to lazy too chase them most of the time. So I plan extra, and make sure the lettuce is on the outside for them to eat. I hate to kill something looking for a meal, even if they are in my garden. Maybe you should try Hard Rock next time/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif Kent

Thanx. I think. Sorta knew the question would be hard to resist. At least I learned a new nasty word, 'cornography'. FWIW, got my first sight of silk today.

If you have bees present they'll do the job for you. You might want to try a little triple 12 around the base of the plants. Whatever you can pinch with your thumb and three fingers and drop on the ground at the base of each plant will do wonders in finishing your corn.

Just as the corn ripens (about one day before you feel it's ready to pick) the coons will tear down your stalks and eat it./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif So have your 12 gauge ready and have a little coon with your corn./w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
