On your property?I asked this on another site but after reading the gas post thought I might ask here.If I wanted to go about getting a test drill done how would I do it.Heres my thought, maybe finding someone with an old truck, applying for a permit and drilling. Is that dooable? If I found something maybe hook up with a bigger company and go from there. How much land does it take to drill, how much of a mess and whats the cost.

I thought you find oil if you shoot at some food, and up from the ground comes a bubblin' crude? Well, that's how Jed Clampett found his oil. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd make sure you own the mineral rights to your own property before you drill. Or, figure out who owns the mineral rights and then determine what sort of deals you can make with them. I know alot of places the property owner does not own the mineral rights.

Have you ever seen a gas/oil drilling rig. They are big 1/2 a city block. You need water lots of it, Drilling mud lots of it expensive. You are gonna have to go deep. 1000 ft or better. You are gonna need a blow out protecter. Big bucks.
Look here at these rigs and most are not oil gas capable. A million bucks is not unreasonable.

You want to drill for gas or oil you lease the land to a drilling /exploration company. Chances are if there was any in your area one of the companies would have already been knocking on your door for a lease. Are you sure you even own the drilling rights. Most of the land west of the Mississippi had all oil rights sold years ago.

There is a couple a few miles away. Most are in the southern part of the state where nobody owns mineral rights over the coal feilds. No rights to my property have ever been sold.Ive seen drills on trucks that they use around here to go 1000'-1500'.

Plumboy,
I don't have any idea, never really thought about having it done. All the drilling I saw done in eastern KY was by coloumbia gas or KY/WVA gas companies. Might check with coloumbia gas they might do it on a share or royalty basis if anything is found. I will keep my ears open and ask a few questions though. Maybe someone at UK in lexington would know. The USGS ?

I think that oil and gas are pretty close to the surface in some places. My Snap- On man and I were having a discussion about anvils and he told me a story about he and a buddy drilling an oil well in Arkansas and using an anvil for a counter balance weight on the pumpjack. I'll see him in a week or so and ask him exactly what he did to drill the well. Being that it sounded like two guys screwing around on some inherited land so I doubt that it was a very sophisticated operation. He did mention that they were being watched rather closely by the local oil and gas people, just to see if they hit anything. He told me that the anvil hanging and banging around on the pumpjack thoroughly confused the experts. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Best be checking with the powers that be for all the rules and regulations before you start.

Then Think
Site prep - surface casing - long string- cementing - mud - holding tanks or lined ponds - shale shaker - BOP'S - drill bits - flow test facilities - tubing and completion methods - wellhead facilities and/or pipelines - site clean up

The picture of the drilling truck looks like a single. You could probably go deeper than 1500 feet but its slow going. Take forever to change bits.

Have fun - spend a few bucks
