Bearing on a chopper on a Do-All went out. How does the silver piece on the shaft come off? I think the piece next to it is a collar to keep the chopper centered? The bearing housing is on the ground.

It is a John Deere Do-All.

Thanks

I think the collar is an eccentric locking collar as described here:

Wide Inner Ring Bearings

If it is, once you have it loosened off you can start removing the "silver piece" which I believe is the inner race.

There are a few different ways to remove it from using a puller like this

to using an angle grinder to cut through one side (might need both sides done) without touching the shaft.

There is also the possibility of shattering the race by using a chisel and a BFH but I wouldn't try that due to the possibility of (a) bending the shaft and (b) it might not work and (c) it will probably cause a lot of damage to the cutting edge of the chisel. If you do want to try that method, use something under the race to act as an anvil and absolutely cover it with a shop rag or similar to contain any small shards that might shatter off. Those shards will have super sharp edges and can hit hard enough to break skin and enter your body.

Heating the race will definitely help it come off if using a puller but might not be necessary...heck, it might even come off with a good firm "hand shake"! :D

I think Mace has it right.

I could even see the set screw that locks the eccentric in place.
Loosen that set screw and rap it lose with a punch and you should be good to go.

From my experience it can be quite easy with the pullers but not always. I don't think you will break it, it sounds reasonable but doesn't seem to work in practice. Heat will help if needed, but try penatrating oil first. You will need to loosen the collar and see if you can drive it back a bit to get the puller hooked on the race. If worse comes to worse I have cut races off with a cutting torch, it is tricky but can be done if you know what you are doing. Ed

YEP! Eccentric collar. I've changed hundreds of them.
There is a set screw and a hole for a spanner wrench. If you turn it one way it will lock. And you can go the other way and it will lock. The trick is to turn it to the middle to unlock it.
I have good luck removing the inner race using an air chisel with a flat end. MAKE SURE TO USE SAFETY GLASSES inner race is hardened and will chip pieces that come off like bullets!

cut off wheel on a grinder
Mace and everybody has it right.

,,, The grinder method is easy and requires least special tools. If you have a grinder just cut a groove as deep as possible in the race. Then use a hand or air chisel in the groove to spread it. The weakened groove will crack and open enuf to leave the race loose.
