Hours??

Can anyone give me any insight or personal experience with how many hours are too many? I am looking at Ford 2110 that has about 3500 hours on it. A friend is telling me that his JD's (about a 950or so)engine is only rated for 3000 hours. The Ford has had a new clutch put in, and some other misc. engine work. I thought disels practically ran forever, I have two Ford diesel pickups, one with 250,000 mile and one with 140,000. On both of them I expect the engine to outlast everything else. Any suggestions/experience would be helpful

Edwin, I don't think many of us have had compact tractors long enough, or use them enough hours per year, to have a definitive answer, but I've discussed this matter with some real farmer neighbors who use bigger tractors and the concensus of opinion seems to be that, with reasonable maintenance, an engine overhaul will be due somewhere between 7,000 and 10,000 hours. If I were buying a used tractor, I'd probably be more concerned about checking it's general condition, possibly finding out what kind of maintenance has been done, etc. than the number of hours on the meter.

Edwin I agree with Bird's statements. I think the larger, real farm tractors well maintained shold be good for 7 to 10K hours before total overhaul.

I really don't have hard and fast evidence on compacts though my opinion follows. I owned a 1900 4wd ford diesel (80 year model) for 15 years. Imaintained it well but it was begining to show some signs of age and warnings of repairs to come. I have looked at a lot of used compacts and never seen one with over 5k hours on em. Some looked good with 4200 hours and some looked rough at 1500 hours. Again goes to owner maintenance and pride of ownership. I just don't believe the 7 to 10k life is in most compacts.

Now I get to hear from all those on the board with compacts at 9200 hours and going strong, with plenty of life in em yet!! Oh well maybe this will spur on some good conversation and be educational as well.

What year model is the 2110, and overall condition?? This particular group of Ford tractors (1510, 1710, 1910,2110) are well built , good tractors. Maybe JimMoore will chime in he has a 1500 or 1700. How many hours on that SEXY tractor JM.
