I have two favorites to make. I have been making potato soup since I was a kid. The other is French onion soup. Either, nice and piping hot... The French onion is good with baguettes and a cheese I cant spell! Greuraire... bad spelling!

French onion soup is something I have occasionally enjoyed in restaurants, but have never made at home. I do make, and am quite fond of, a sort of potato soup, but I use an equal, or even greater, amount of turnip instead of just potato. But it's also hard to beat the old homemade vegetable/beef soup and a pan of cornbread.

French onion soup is easy to make, but takes a while cooking and stirring the onions. I have a couple recipes I use. It is well worth the time. I also try to use homemade stock for it too. Nothing like boiling some bones with some key seasoning to make a nice stock, especially since most commercial stuff is loaded with salt.

I go by recipes for onion soup; for potato soup it's in my head, and depends on what I have on hand.

And yes, a nice pan of fresh baked cornbread goes mighty fine with it :D

Don't forget slice of home made bread or fresh biscuit for dipping into the stew. :)

Soup/bread -- One of my favorite meals.

I like all soups. Perhaps Borscht tops the list with tomato bean an equal or is it chowders which are really soups!:D

Now I am starved and will require an energy infusion.:D

This time of year we have soup all the time, well, except for breakfast. My wife is taking last weeks last bowl with her for lunch today and I made another big pot last night.

Mine's a little different.

Last night's started off with about half of a trimmed brisket cut into very small pieces. This was browned off with seven or eight large diced jalopenas and two onions, also finely diced. Half of a garlic (about six cloves) was cut up into little pieces and added also. I also put in a half a pound of ground venison for flavor.

After the meat and good stuff were brown I added a bunch of diced potatoes. When everything was good and cooked I added two cans of beans, pinto, kidney, two sixteen oz packages of frozen peas and carrots, one sixteen oz bag of frozen cut okra, about twelve oz of V8 juice and some water.

This stuff gets better with age. About day three the taste is so good you'll have two different kinds of tears in your eyes.

It is spicey. But it's not the burn your tongue make you cry kind of spicey. It's the "Gawd this is good" three mouthfulls later "Ohhh this is hot!" kind of spicey.

The other half of the brisket and venison was browned off with lots of jalopenas, onions, and garlic. When it was browned off I added all the potatoes diced up real small the pan would hold. We had hash burritos for supper.

One of the things I do to break up the boredom of having soup I'll cut up and lay fresh corn tortilla pieces in the bottom of a bowl. I'll cover them with shredded cheese. Then I'll fill the bowl with soup. It's no longer soup, but it isn't bad.

Harvey, if it wasn't for the unusual weather and snow, I think I'd come to your house for dinner.:D

Had a low calorie soup last night that wasn't bad at all....a bean and ham thing with veggies and no fat to speak of. Wifie made some low calorie cornbread muffins to go with it. Those were pretty good too, but as soon as I get off this !@#$%^ diet I'm making a big pot of greasy, hot as all get out chili and a big pan of what is called Mexican cornbread in the recipe and is loaded with peppers and cheese and cream style corn. It's in the signle digits here at night and is going negative in the next few days according to the weatherboob. Fat! You need fat to survive the cold! Somebody save me and tell my wife!
