terramite t5c
I have to cut off the front ram mount on a loader bucket on my terramite. T5c. Baby backhoe..

and make a new one , with some reinforcements ...
my order is something like
1/2" X 4" X 8" two pieces. .
3/8" X 6" X 18"
And maybe some more 3/8" for gussets.

When looking online I see I have a choice of hot rolled or cold rolled ..

is there a difference in welding between the two ?
price spread ?

And if anyone knows of a place with 25 miles or so from Pittsburgh that would cut to purchase..so I don't get hammered on shipping would be a great help..
Thank you.

You won't notice any difference in welding between hot rolled, and cold rolled. I'd use 7018 my self.

If your'e talking plate, there has to be a fab shop/welding shop around there. They'll have these little drops either by their sheer or in the metal "can" & would probably be happy to sell them to you & for a few bucks cut them to your size. You'd be surprised to see how much little stuff like this and much more ends up in the scrap dumpster that earns them pennies a pound. I had a decent size fab/erection outfit near me, asked them about the stuff in their dumpsters (2 40 yd. cans) and they said have at it!:cool2: I eventually got to know the guy's there and got tons of their scrap, my treasure, free. I even got a 4'x10'x3/4 welding table that they cut off one of their 30'-40' long tables. The yard guy's loaded it on my trlr. with their forklift! Unfortunately, I moved away from that fantastic & free source. A lot of places will not let you in the dumpster for liability reasons any more.

Cold rolled is finished and will rust pretty fast. Hot rolled is what you need and less expensive. If you want a shaft for a bushing use cold rolled. If you want rungs for a ladder, use hot rolled. Structural steel is all hot rolled. 3/8" and 1/2" seems awfully heavy for a baby backhoe. Can you post a pic, of what you need to fix?

Ok..
here's what i got.. i bought this last week.. i was more concerned about how it ran and functioned .. i saw all the welds on it but quickly thought it was just repairs. ..

You know how it is when you buy a car or house ..A week later your like "what the he'll is that ! "

It now appears that this 4 and 1 loader bucket in not for this tractor..but it works ..
sort of ...

The ram is mounted too far away from the bucket .. The good ..crazy articulation in the dump direction. .

The bad...no up travel . ( well like an inch or two) this will not work for me ..i need to be able to scoop and carry dirt down hill with out losing my load..

Note the pic with ram retracted and up pitch of scoop..

So..here's what's haunting me ..what if this was done on purpose. .i can't figure out an application ..but what if it was and i need that on the job site. .

my idea was to break out the torches ( I've gotten really good with those things)
burn away the old mounts and install a new mount with two ram locations. ..
One set of Mount holes close to the scoop to give me normal operation , up and down pivot. ..

The second set of holes farther away from the scoop (like you see in the pics)
to give me that crazy dump articulation. .

now ..I was able to get a stock pin ..and the weld on bushing from terramite. .

yes its a lot of burning and grinding to clean it up.. but it's my tractor, so my labor is free ..and new buckets are expensive. .

I surely wouldn't pay for cold rolled for that project.

looks to me that moving the dump cylinders pin closer to the bucket face will solve the problems, your dump angle should stay about the same and have more rollback.if it were me , I would cut off the ears from the bucket and shorten them up , re weld them back on before i bought any steel.

The problem with hot rolled round stock is it is not always accurately round, and definitely not smooth, the tolerance on dimension is pretty loose. Shafts and pins need to be smooth and accurate. Cold rolled is ground and polished to the accurate dimension. I use shaft couplings for pin bushings and cold rolled for the pins if a forged pin is not available. Cut to the length needed. Couplings have a very heavy wall so do not distort from welding. I then fit the pin to the bushing using an adjustable reamer if necessary to enlarge a little. All cold rolled shapes and flat sheets are accurate dimensionally and polished.

I like Bladehauler's idea.
That said,
That steel order would be about $44 + shipping at speedy metals Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Online Metal Store | Small Quantity Metal Orders | Metal Cutting, Sales & Shipping | Buy Steel, Aluminum, Copper, Brass, Stainless | Metal Product Guides at OnlineMetals.com is another source. If I was at work and needed it tomorrow I would order from McMaster. Delivered to your door vs. running around town adds some value.

Call your local steel suppliers, they might have drops too. Scrap recyclers, you never know.

Cold rolled is ground and polished to the accurate dimension.

Ron

Most cold roll steel is not ground and polished but it does not have the scale that hot roll has and is a better choice for the pins. Or you could spend the extra money and get actual ground and polished /www.speedymetals.com/s-101-turned-ground-polished.aspx
