Nearly had to shoot a dog last nite in my back yard we were sitting by the pond drinking a beer when the wife hollers "dog alert big dog"!

I jump up and run around there and yup a big hyper acting dog and 3 horses and some clown with ropes in his hand walking up all on my private property stomping all over my grass or whats left of it from the drought.

Long story short after a lot of cussing and hollering by me and my wife at the clown and the animals and even with a sheriffs deputy there they wouldn't get that dog under control we could see it wasn't a mean dog twords people at least he was just super hyper.

The clown with the lead ropes trying to catch the 3 horses kept saying the dog goes with the horses - I said none of them belong on my property get them the **** out of here now!

The horses walked all over my late season corn and ate some of it too oh I was smokin mad by then well clown finally caught all of them and headed walking them down the road. The last thing I said to the deputy was if that dog takes after one of my cats I will shoot it she nods.

Just like I feared I see him take off like a streak twords my back yard where my big white 25# half blind and half deaf house cat was sitting with us on the table out at the pond gazebo minding his own business and enjoying being outside with us while we are off dealing with this other mess had to leave him alone we were both worried sick about it he was completely unaware of the dog.

I take off too as fast as I can hollering at the top of my lungs and when I round the corner of the house I see him and he is after one of my outside cats so soon as I get a clean shot I skid to a stop and put a .45 round into the dirt in front of his nose.

He stops all startled and isn't sure what to do while I run up waving and hollering and make him go the other way away from the pond area and he leaves my yard then finally. I find out later the deputy picks it up on the road in the patrol car and then follows the clown down the road slowly to where they belong.

The deputy comes back later and asks if I want to press charges and I say no but the guy with the dog can thank his lucky stars for me being an animal lover and not shooting to kill when his dog chased my cat which we warned everybody over and over about and what would happen if he did and he did it I gave him a choice he made the right move and left.

Now the story would have been different if he would have not stopped and /or would have turned 20 feet behind me where my big white kitty was sitting minding his own business then it would have been lights out for the dog with no hesitation or feelings of compassion for animals just preservation of the weak and helpless like it should be done.

Poor old big happy kitty never even heard the pistol go off 50 feet away from him luckily and stayed put, the deputy heard it and the whole neighborhood did also and all the hollering and commotion what a mess deputy and the clown was probably relieved to see the dog out on the road alive.

I had trouble with a lab fro ma subdivision a few miles away. He didnt mean any harm just clumsy and high strung. I had one of those big disposable baking pans for a turkey. I put it on a fragile string and looped it in his collar and let it go. SHould have heard it running down the road. He stays at home now.

My ex neighbor had gotten horse fever one time. He is a cheapo. He got several cheap horses and a few high dollar ones he won at an auction. He was slacking on the feedings to save money. I had them get out and eat bushes and garden erosion control hay we had on trailers every thing. Then he got a steer gonna fatten it. He left it there with the horses and just left it on a week and a half boat trip. THe steer got in the road one night and and a man almost hit it for the 4th time. I saw a horse trailer go down the road with the steer one night.

I have a serious dislike of people around my rural area that buy these 1/2 acre lots with a junk trailer house on it and start a horse and goat ranch and then cant even keep them penned up.

There is a lot of them around here too thanks to the lousy county regulations they are afraid to restrict livestock because of the feedlot regulations being in conflict.

This is an ongoing problem and its not the first time we have had something similar happen and someone will have to die in a car/horse or car/cow accident for them to open their eyes is what we are afraid of.

My wife and I have started zoning changes with the county a couple years ago that do deal with acreage per animal and distance regulations from residences but the county hasn't adopted them yet.

It sounds to me like maybe you should calm down a little bit.

Not good. You have every right to protect/defend your pets on your own property.

Just curious ... did you have the gun on you or did you need to go into the house to get the gun?

I think a little over reaction on your part escalating the whole ordeal from the beginning we have had cows from a big professional dairy get loose and are happy to help catch them and get them home. We have also had horses get loose around here other peoples along with my dads getting loose before. It's the neighborly thing to do to help out. Just my 2 cents but neighbor's should help neighbor's no questions asked.

Just a thought Car Doc, what would have happened if you and your wife would have said hello to the "clown" and calmly (animals are pretty good at picking up on peoples energy) helped him catch his horses after of course putting your big white deaf housecat back in the the house?

While the guy and his horses were on your property, I would be willing to bet he didnt drive them there on purpose and he was plenty embarassed as well as concerned about the welfare of his horses.

I am sure you would have ended up with a grateful neighbor and maybe even a friend! One of my best friends is a "clown" and I cherish his friendship!

Wow, glad I don't live with hyper neighbors. Why is this guy a clown? I didn't get that in the story? Do you think he was out "walking" his horses and he enjoyed having some guy screaming while he's trying to get his horses calmed down enough so he could catch them?

I'm sure there was a reason this guy was a clown, but I feel bad for him. He probably would have wanted to return and appologize and make things right, but there's no way he could do it safely with someone that he may be seeing as an irate, armed individual. I'm sure the sheriff even warned him to just stay away.
