I'm rebuilding this for a friend, but I have no experience with these units. I marked the tines before pulling it all apart but all the markings (except one) washed off in the clean up process. Do I have the tines on correctly, or are they reversed?

Thanks,
Dave

I don't think the tines are on correctly. The 2 tines facing front and back on the right side are supose to be on the inside of the outside collar and the other 2 may be out to far, at least they are on my 84 horse and I put my new tines on according to the instructions that came with them. The bolts that hold the tine holders on are out much farther from the tines. Again that is how they are on mine, maybe there are differences for different years.

If you need, tomorrow I can see if I still have the instructions, they sure help. I'm assuming you have forward rotating tines

The bolts are on correctly. Sorry I was not quite clear - I did not replace any tines, I simply pulled the entire tine units off the tapered tine shaft as this was a bearing and tranny replacement. The tines and tine holders are original, AFAIK (~1992).

I really don't know which way it is supposed to rotate, as I have only seen this thing in operation like once, years ago. I am helping a friend out as I am the mechanical guy, not the gardener...

The front of the tiller is to the right in the second photo. If they are "forward rotating" that would seem to mean that they rotate CW in the second photo. If so, I am guessing they are correct. But again, I just don't know. It's an either/or...either the tines are on the correct sides, or I flip them to the opposite sides.

If you can post something from the instructions, that would be great. even a photo of the illustration pages would cover me, I bet.

Thanks,
Dave

They are simply complicated, replaced mine this winter with new tines, took one set off at a time,[had other sets to compare when I put back on],and still had to think a little while doing it[and that hurts me],:D

Seems to me that they need replacing.......When I changed mine a few months ago was quite confusing to this ol brain; but finally got it. Seems there is something wrong and backwards. The manual shows a good pic of how they install...........Good luck......Dennis

So can you please post a pic from the manual or a link to it? With a couple diagrams or photos, I am sure I can figure it out, but I have nothing to go on...

Thanks, Dave

Different type tiller but the bolt pattern looks the same??

Now the question is; is it forward or reverse rotation?

Sorry, I couldn't find the instructions for tine replacement. Since you didn't remove the tines, just the holders, I wouldn't worry about them, the tines are bolted different than mine but maybe thats normal for different years.

As for the holders, as long as you slid the inside slot over the key on the tine shaft they should be OK. From the pictures, you have them set up for a forward rotation machine (sharp edge of tines dig from front to back) which is what most Troy-Bilts were in the early 90's. If its a counter rotating machine the dull backside will hit first and you would need to switch holders from side to side but I think your OK.

Your friend does need new tines, their pretty worn. New ones will make a big difference and installation instructions should come with them.

The tines are oriented in the right direction. I remember that if you dont have the wheels in gear and the tines are on that thing will take you for a ride, believe me I know. Even though its probably not the exact model here is a pdf of the tine lay out for a try bilt. If you need to look at a different view go here. Troy Bilt Parts

The owner had taken a pic before he started tearing it apart. Once he sent that to me, I could see they were on correctly. Thanks for the help guys. I'll mention he might want to get new tines.
