We have had horses for about 7 years, and I built stalls in the barn for them. The problem is that in the summer it is their only source of shade, and that leaves us with a security issue in the barn (anyone can enter through the stalls).

Well, a couple of weeks ago I purchased a beauty of a used TSC PHD with 12" auger for $200, and had been itching to shoot some holes, so I thought, "time for a shelter".

Once the posts were square (the hard part) everything else went up pretty quick. One week later, it is all done, the horses have shade and protection from rain and wind, and I have a secure shop. Everyone's a winner!!

Thanks for sharing pic's/story.Nice clean looking set-up you have there.
You got a great deal on your PHD,I'am sure you've already checked gear oil in it.;)

Nice job. Do they crib? If not, consider some wood lining the inside at least 4 foot up. I have a similar "loafing shed" that's 36' long but built the same. We had a mare kick right at the seam of two pieces and put her foot through it. That wasn't the bad part...when she pulled it back through she did some serious damage to the coronary band above the hoof (lots of blood) and was down for a while. She mended but you know how horses and scars go. Anyway, just a word to the wise.

I may put some OSB up in the fall. I may also close off the right side. Want to see if any snow blows in there in the winter. They don't crib. They have full 10 x 10 stalls they overnight in during cold months.

Nice horse run-in shed. Your horses will enjoy the escape from the elements.

I'd suggest you use 2x6/8/10 boards for your bottom base kickboards up to ~4ft high, then OSB above 4 ft. To close off the right side for winter consider installing C channel on the inside of your center and right posts, then slide in and stack 2x6/8/10 boards to build a removable wall.

About winter, how much snow do you get? Hard to tell in your pic how the roof front and rear support boards are attached to your posts. On the front I dont see an inside support board or lag bolts being used. Make sure you can adequately support the expected snow loads for your area based on your roof pitch and roof supports.

Id echo this, Got a few horses myself. Great job on the shed but I'd add wood from the ground 1/2 way up on the inside. For the small cost, you'll save them from potential injury and a big Vet bill. you could use ply wood, or go to the loval sawmill and get some 1x8 rough sawn barn board etc..
