Guys I just uploaded a picture - Hopefully it shows up - My question is I have a new building and I want to use the "leanto" area as a horse run in and I don't see many pictures of how horse people do this - Most pictures you see on the internet at a morton website etc show no horses, no gates etc. My concern is that the horses might get to playing around and will kick a hole in the metal - So, I'm trying to figure out how to prevent that - I'm not ready to put full stalls in this area yet - Anyone have a suggestion or a picture? Thanks

I am not sure what you mean by a horse run-in. I have a metal barn and I already have a couple of dents in it from a younger horse in the yard kicking it while cavorting around. I would never put a horse in a stall with metal walls unless I lined them with 3/4" plywood to prevent damage to the metal.

Thanks for the reply - By Run-in I mean they are on pasture, they can go into the sheltered area if they want to, but they are not locked in

A real easy and quick solution is to put in some T-posts and electric tape or rope right next to the wall with five or more rows of conductive material. It will not eliminate the risk of your horses kicking through the wall but will go a long way towards that goal.

If at all possible, can you slide in some sheets of plywood between the wall purlins and the metal siding?

The dents are not the issue here, rather, have you ever seen a horse kick through the tin and then pull their foot back out? It is not pretty.

That's a nice barn from what I can see...I don't think I'd let the horses stand around it. Somebody will irritate somebody else and hoofs are going to fly.

I have three sided shelters with metal on the outside and 2 layers of 3/8" OSB on the inside (only 4' up with the second layer). They seem to be holding up well enough except for the Arab that has decided that it's fun to crib on the wood despite commercial anti cribbing products all the way to home brewed pepper sauce. I guess I'm going to have to line her shelter with flat sheet metal.

I just built a tin roof, no sides at all. Three strategically located trees plus one 4x4 post. Granted it's not much comfort if the wind gets howling, but they sure love it for the shade and to keep a cold rain off.

Your going to need to protect the outside wall and protect the horses from kicking it. Horse can easily kick through the tin and then you will have big problems when they try to pull their leg out. 3/4" plywood is probably the cheapest but they can probably still cause some damage. I think the electric fence/wire idea is bad in this situation. If they get shocked once or twice, they will quit using the shelter. Mutiple horses are bound to push another one into the electric fence in tight quarters such as this relatively small overhang.

Thanks Guys - I'm going to put up 3' of 2x6s and then 4' of plywood above that - Which will give me 7' of protection - Anybody have any pictures of what they have done?

Are you putting the wood inside the tin or outside? You can easily pull the corner trim off and slide wood between the purlins.

Use two layers of 3/4" plywood with staggered seams. It won't protect the tin from dents but will stop a hoof from going through. That way, the wood is shielded from the weather.

I'm putting it outside - It won't look as nice as your idea QrtrHrs- but it ensures the metal is protected - A friend of mine told me his horses bit every single ridge - I don't want to deal with that.
