So you may or may not know that I'm an EMS helicopter pilot. So on Xmas eve, the weather was clearing during my work shift so I had to make it the 20 some miles into work at 5am even though the roads were closed due to ice and drifting snow. This was the result... Pics of me recovering my truck with my Bobcat..

What happened was on US 30 doing about 40 mph through various clear pavement and scattered packed snow/ice, took it out of 4x4 b/c there was enough clear sections. Hit a patch of black ice, plus a 30 knot crosswind at the same time, just pushed the back end right around with no chance of countersteering, I was along for the ride. No injury at all. Stood up on the passenger door wondering how to get out when I realized the engine was still running. Killed the engine, then a nice lady in a minivan on her way to work at Cabelas stopped and gave me a ride to work, kicked out the sunroof to get out....All my xmas presents to my family were in the back of the truck, scattered like a lawn sale... Roads throughout the state continued to be closed through yesterday so never had a chance to make it home for the holidays..besides, that would be a cold *** ride some 150 miles in 5 degree temps on a tractor doing 15mph..

Some pics of the drifts in my yard I had to clear to get out of the driveway...I know some of you canucks and n'easterners this is nothing, but it sucks when you're not used to it...But it was the ice that was the problem, road crews refused to put out any sand or salt.

Some pics of the damage after I got it in the barn.

Got it mostly thawed out today, checked fluids and it fired right up. Took the camper shell off, all the windows worked, only problem is I have no outside mirrors anymore and the passenger door wont open all the way. Even the radio antenna survived.

As I sat at work all day, listening to the scanner, there were at least 6 more accidents at that very stretch of road, one landed in the ditch about 40 yards from my truck, another was a tractortrailer jackknife, all were recovered quickly. There was even an accident that evening while my friend and I were recovering personal items out of the cab on the way home. On the way home, the winds were so strong and ice so slick, that even at 10 mph, the wind was blowing my borrowed truck off the side of the road.

Looks like you had a wild ride. Glad you are ok. That really stinks about not being home for Christmas.

Main thing is you are safe and you know what they say about car crashes and helicopter landings....any crash you can walk away from is a good landing.

Same thing happened to me years ago. I was going one wat and a plow truck was coming the other way and he was way over on my side so I hugged the burm of the road and the drift caught my front tire and flipped me.

It as an old Land Cruiser, he backed up put me on all fours with a chain and I was on my way, with an apology.

Now when I see them coming I go to a full stop if I can do it safely.

Stay safe out there.

Speaking from experience, pickup truck with cap, icy roads and wind is a bad combination. I have had a couple of trucks with caps and it is surprising how much difference they make in a crosswind. Never tipped one over but have had a couple of really bad cases of white knuckle.
Good that you got out okay. It was probably hard on your truck but that can be fixed or replaced. And you got to use your tractor in a new way:rolleyes:.
I had Christmas at my place this year so my truck never left the garage. I'm still eating leftovers though. The weather here was actually pretty good, a bit cold but not much snow and virtually no wind. I finally got to use my new snowblower on the 23rd.

Sorry to hear about your tough luck. But glad you are ok. Next year, buy much heavier Christmas presents. Might, or might not, help. :)

However, on another note...that loader all the way in the air and the ROPS at half-mast could lead to another brush with the grim reaper. They tip over real easy especially on un-even ground. Don't ask me how I know....back in the day ROPS wasn't even thought of yet.

Rofl...heavier xmas presents yes lol.

Yeah, the raised loader was just for the "money" shot on the snowdrift height. I get the willies when it's up that high.

I'd trade you. A lifelong friend of mine lost his 25 year old son in a snowmobile accident Dec 12 and his father last night.
