I rebuilt a roll off Trailer with a Honda engine for the hyd pump. It had sat for about two years. I drained out the old gas, got it to run off starting fluid to confirm the carb was bad. Ordered new carb and it seemed to run fine. Now sometimes it will run great for 20 mins. Other times it acts like it痴 running out of fuel or the choke is on and dies. It won稚 restart for a while then I値l try it again and it痴 purring like a kitten. I tried loosening the fuel cap, moving the choke lever to smooth it out but it keeps acting up occasionally. Getting frustrated as when I need it to work I need it to work. Can稚 be broke down after driving an hour to dump a load.

Any ideas or places to look. Carb was a cheap one from amazon. Filter is good but need to change the plug

Is there an in tank strainer on the pickup fuel line?

Check the gas line too. Make sure it isn't cracked so the engine is sucking air.

Have you disconnected the low oil shut down and tried it?
Have seen more than one fail, when it works (low oil) or acts up it grounds the ignition.
Or there is a chance you have a bad coil.
I have worked on hundreds of small honda engines and only found this once.

When it dies does it start back up or is it dead for some time? If it doesn't start back up it should be easy to sort out. The first thing I would check is if you have spark. From there you'll know if you have an ignition or fuel problem.

Will it run fine "forever" under no load then die awhile after you put a load on it? Does it have one of those fuel pumps driven by crankcase pressure fluctuation?

Could be your pumps getting lazy. :confused3:

Not that I saw. I thought I got all the crap out of the bottom of the tank but it could be sucking debris. When I chance the hose, I’ll pull the tank and ensure it’s clean

No. The new line that came with the carb was to short. It had a filter with it. Might be the easiest to swap out and go from there.

Haven’t checked the low oil or messed with it. It starts running bad like it’s running out of fuel.

Sometimes it’ll start up others it’s done for a while. Go try it again and it runs fine.

Unfazed by load

After reading thing here it’s got to be fuel related. Easiest is to clean the tank and replace the lines. I’ll go from there then

You didn't say what model but if it is the regular horizontal crank engine it will have a plastic screw in strainer in the bottom of the tank that seals with an "O" ring.
The screen is so fine that most water will not pass through! (only by vibration)
Have seen engines with about 1" of water that will get no fuel past screen.
The Honda ignition is so hot that you can't really see the spark by shorting the wire or plug.
I found that a cheap HF spark tester works great.

Thanks I’ll look for that. It would make the most sense

I have one of those cheap testers that you just unplug the ignition wire from the plug and it plugs into the plug and then the ignition wire plugs into it. It has a light that flashes each time the plug fires. You should be able to get one at any auto parts store for $10. You would need to be careful but you could leave it in place while the engine is running and when it's about to stall look to see if the light is on. If so then you have a fuel problem.
