Indiana,, I think your better suited for wind there arn't you???

Depends where. Northwest Indiana is very flat. There is only an 11 foot drop in elevation from South Bend Indiana to the Illinois border 50 miles south of Chicago. Relatively mild rolling plains in the northern half of the state. Once you get down to southern Indiana, there are hills, valleys, white water rapids, caves, steep ravines and stone cliffs. It really has some diverse landscapes.

Search the Internet for DIY wind power. Look at Instructables - Make, How To, and DIY neat site and there are some plans on how to build a wind generator. To generate DC current you pass powerful magnets across coils and the coils generate DC current. By looking at the plans for wind current, you can adapt that design around the spinning shaft created from the water wheel. Not sure how fast the water wheel turns, you may need to gear up the spinning shaft to get enough speed for the generator to create DC current. Look into buying a brake rotor blade from a car. Use car parts where possible. You can get em cheap and can be adapted for your purpose quite nicely. Sorry for rambling here.

I had not thought of the raft idea, but that makes good sense to me.

I think the Corp. of Engineers has jurisdiction if the stream is navigable.
