I've a workshop that's 40'x60'.

It's the building in the middle with the red side and white doors, with the trailer parked in front.

I'm wanting to put in a Hoist/ Bridge Crane/roof support using adjustable building columns (like Shop Tapco 12' 3" to 12' 7" Steel Adjustable Building Column at Lowes.com ).

Purpose would be twofold - to add support to a poorly built roof and to support some type of beam so I could throw a chain hoist over it to unload things, like furniture, woodstoves, engines, maybe a ton of bricks, off my dually.

I planned on tying it in tight with the roof trusses and concrete floor. The columns spec at a 13K load. The doorway span is 20'.

The last two made me realize I needed more engineering.

It seems unrealistic to expect to expect to lift a ton of bricks with a beam span of 20' unless I got a really big beam.

Any suggestions on what size beam to span 20' and support 1,000 lbs? 500lbs?

I'd really prefer to not block off smaller areas with columns to get a span of say 8'.

Would those "engineered wood beams" be a substitute?

I wished I had known you wanted to build a trolley system, THe scrap yard I pilfer had taken in a large system from a factory thet remodeled. I picked up a couple trollies and I beams for 25 cents a pound. I got enough to build a smaller set up for a freind. They cut up 4 complete set ups. Im friends with the manager and if you like I can keep an eye out for another set. They come there pretty regular. Also several steel benches come in if you could use one for a welding table.

I would think it would be less expensive to use some scrap 4" or 6" sch 80 seamless pipe and cut it to length and cap it both ends with pieces of 1/4 or 3/8 plate. In place of the jack screw on the column use some steel shim plates on top of the pipe column and tack them in place so they can't shift or work their way out.

But overall I think a portable gantry would be the way to go if your loads are 1/2 ton or less.

Here's the one I built. Ten foot vertical clearance and nine feet between the uprights:

If you ever see any of the single sided, cantilevered material racks come through, let me know. I need to get my lumber and steel organized.

Thanks

I sure can keep a look out for them. THey had some 2 weeks ago but they had angled racks.

An engineered wood beam will be deeper than a steel beam. Some pictures of the inside and where you want to put the roof support/crane would help us out.

I built a cantilevered shop crane with a 10x10 work area. It is on wheels so I can roll it around. With a 20 foot span you might consider a cantilevered design from each support end. Not sure in what length these beams come but if you can go out farther than 20 feet a cantilever may work.
