Hinomoto N209
 Now I know what to do all weekend: reading hundreds of posts on this GREAT WEBSITE. But I have a serious problem. My Hinomoto N209 has only 24 hours on it. Guess it's since it was rebuilt. Had several problems which I fixed already. But now I have one that has a very experienced diesel mechanic scratch his head. It's a professional and it's NOT me. The tractor had been sitting in the shed for about 2 months during which time one of the hoses from the fuel tank to the filter had cracked just behind the clamp. Yes, the fuel filter is clean. In other words most of the fuel had leaked out. I had to do a small job and when I cranked it up, the LOW FUEL light came on but started immediately. Regardless I did the job (about 10 minutes total) and most of it idle speed. On the way back it stalled about ten feet from the storage shed (garage) and there it sits today, blocking my drive way. Equipped with a front end loader and box scraper, both sitting on the ground.

I hired this mechanic and he has worked on it five hours already, but the tractor will not start. He replaced all fuel hoses and even replaced the OEM fuel pump with a new electric one. Now we have fuel all the way to the injectors (3 cylinder). While cranking, the exhaust smokes dark grey to black and plenty of it. But, the thing will not fire. My mechanic is a truck engine type mainly and this little tractor has him stumped. All this just because the thing ran out of fuel. There must be something that prevents the engine from firing. But what??? Any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Before this the engine always fired after no more than two-three revolutions. BTW, on top of the engine it says: HINOMOTO DIRECT INJECTION. While I'm here let me mention that I have been hunting for a parts/operators manual for a very long time. Any help there?

Thanks and my location is S.E. Arizona.

Why would he replace the fuel pump? I didn't know any of these smaller greys had a fuel pump, just gravity feed from the fuel tank. I have had a few Hinomotos, but never an N series though.

I would assume that the mechanic has bleed the fuel system, including the injector lines?

My reasonably educated and experienced guess is that it has not been bled properly.

Hino's (my A-C 5020 is a Hino down underneath) are notoriously hard tyo bleed thoroughly. Guy I bought mine from warned me to NEVER run out of fuel as the one time he did it took him umpteen tries over 3+ days to bled it enough to get it to start and run. Dunno if there is something in their layout that traps air somewhere it is hard to push through the lines or what, but you are hardly the first, and surely not the last to have this problem with a Hino.

If you use just the bleed screw, yes, they don't bleed very well. I usually loosed the injector line at the injector to bleed the lines.

I have a Hino ( AC5020 ) and it has been a real bear to get back running after a filter change. Always has been from new, any more I change the filter near electricity just in case as it does drain the battery just to get it restarted and I crack the lines at the pump and the injector.

Any chance you could pull it off to start it (to give the starter a rest). Also, does it have a manual kill/shut off that might be pulled out? Kids like pulling and twisting knobs (and sometimes adults forget to push them back in).

make sure that it the air cleaner and any tube before it is free from obstructions , all a diesel needs is air and fuel at the right time, if fuel is at the injectors you either are not getting enough air or the timing is off. 2 months is plenty of time for mice to build a big nest

1. Turn the lever on fuel filter to left side (full open position)

2. Loosen the outer screw on fuel filter and allow air bubbles and fuel to drain out

3. Tighten the screw

4. Loosen the inner screw on fuel filter and allow air bubbles and fuel to drain out

5. Tighten the screw

6. Loosen the small hex head bleed screw on the right side of the fuel injection pump 1-1 1/2 to 2 turns counterclockwise
DO NOT REMOVE THE SCREW

7. Allow air bubbles and fuel to drain from the bleed screw until all signs of air bubbles disappear and fuel only drains out

8. Tighten the bleed screw securely
DO NOT TURN ENGINE OVER TO ATTEMPT TO START IT WHILE BLEED SCREW IS LOOSE

9. Start the engine. If engine fails to start after a reasonable cranking period, there may be some air bubbles in the high presure injection lines. Partially loosen the high pressure injection lines where they attach to injectors and turn engine over several times. Tighten lines and start engine.
