Last night we replaced all the chipper teeth on our head for todays job. Right out of the box we hit an engine block hidden under some brush. Took out four teeth on a quick $600 job.

The scrap pice for that engine block won't cover that repair will it. That some bad luck.

That's one of the reasons we only use our chippers in truly virgin areas or swamp where there is way less chance of finding metal. Rocks are one thing metal is another.

We run a combination of both and it took out two of each. $180 for the two hammers and $100 for the two chippers.

That sucks. Its one thing to ruin teeth on a big job where you have the profit to cover it, but when you do on the small ones it makes you wish you had just stayed at home.

And now we're stuck with not a single object to winch from. Gotta figure out how to have fun with this.

Depending on the soil, a friend of mine has about 10 mobile home anchors that he screws into the ground when he gets stuck, equally spaced apart and with chains connecting them, and uses that for a anchor point. He has them laid out and connected with the attaching point at the point of a V. Never seen it done, but that is what I understood from his discription. Keeps interlocking chains as tight as possible during installation and the winch bends them till the slack is all taken up. I suggested binders to take the slack out of the chains but he just does his thing.

Yellowdogsvc has a good idea. On those small jobs, that's when you'll spend more time getting unstuck, flats, and whatever else that's possible. You need to have a (oh,crap clause) to protect your bottom line.
