After 2.5 weeks research, considering DIY bhoe plans, and even designing one myself... I decided to order a Harbor Freight backhoe (with 1-day 20% off it was $2,700 out the door).
I steered away from the 3pt because of fear of damaging my tractor...and also cost. Even used 3pts small enough were priced very high. The DIY plans out there are good looking machines...but after pricing materials I kept coming up with $200-$300 less than the complete HF backhoe. THEN I'd have all that work to do.
So, anyway... should work fine for the small trenches and tree holes I need. I'll let anyone know that's curious in a few weeks how well it really performs. I have sandy soil (gets hard packed though-so we'll see) so it should work ok.
I read reviews and people say you have to do little repairs along the way on it so I'm geared up for that. We'll see if it's worth it's salt soon.
