I'm still working with the hydraulic filtration on the tractors that I started on back in Jan. It just plugs in the remotes and filters from there with a 3 micron high pressure filter and a water removal filter that's low pressure and dumps back to tank. The water filter only takes part of the flow from the high pressure flow.

I've seen particles that look to be from the wet brake pads. The filter on the tractor won't remove those as it's 25 micron. I've also been able to remove some water with both filters. Then I've seen on the 3 micron filter something that appears to be wax. Not much but some. It gathers at the top of the filter cover/bowl.

My questions is, is there any way the filters can remove additives from the hydraulic oil?

I do not believe fluid filters (hyd) can remove additives. Maybe I am wrong, but that was/is my understanding.

Thanks Mike. I didn't think so either but the wax film I found in the top of the filter threw me. Never seen that on any filter before.

Thanks for your reply.

We have some hydraulic filtration down to .25 micron Beta 75 filters. I've not heard of filtration harming additives except for one instance where the wrong additive package was batched with the wrong base stock. The additive was falling out anyway and it just ended up in the filters as a gel type coagulant. How's the filtration coming now?

How do you get hydraulic oil to flow through a .25 micron filter? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

My guess is pressure; or the efficency or capacity is poor and the fluid goes right by the filter media.

Either guess is wrong. I don't understand what you guys are saying? The media is tight but the filters cost a mint. They're extremely well built polyester media Hilco filters. Oil goes right through them, until they clog up. There is no bypass.

ok, what PSi are you running them on? And on what?

Gas turbine oil utilized in the hydraulic protection and control circuit, custom made Hilco sidestream filter, differential new is only 2.5psid, fed from it's own supply pump at less than ten pounds.

I know exactly what you are referring to.

I can't remember the micron rating on the hydraulic system filters on the GE frame 6 I now operate or the 7EA DLN I used to operate. I'm in the middle of an outage I'll have to check it out. I'm sure our filters are no where near that fine.

We could have probably used something like that on the 7EA. Used to have orifice plug up on the control oil to the distillate system when transferring to secondary fuel nozzles.
