I drove this thing about 12 miles back to my house down some back country dirt roads. It did really good. The only thing I did notice is I had it in high gear (4th) and it would pull up to speed and then the governor would cut it out for a sec, then back up to speed, and over and over. So I guess maybe a new governor is in order? But when she was pulling up a hill it wouldn't cut out just went right on up it. Overall I am extremely pleased with it. There are a few things I need to do, replace wiring, find the right size battery, and go through it from front to back.

Oh I didn't know that. I'm such a NOOB lol, let me go check out tractor data, That might be a good color to slap on the old girl. I like the ford blue a whole lot better than the red. And she is a worker not a trailer queen lol.

That's a great lookin' tractor. If it doesn't smoke a lot and the gears and clutch are good, you stole it. If the hydraulics are also good, you just made the buy of the year. You need to post that in Muhammad's thread about great deals. There aren't many deals better than that. Gosh! The tires even look new. Are you sure the seller was "of sound mind and body"?;)

I think your governor working as you described is nearly perfect, especially if it pulled steady when you went uphill. The governors on these tractors are extremely reliable. You can make an adjustment for sensitivity, but if the tractor works like it should under load, I wouldn't touch it. There's something really cool about pulling a rotary cutter into heavy grass and that engine reaches down and comes back with a bunch of power and a throaty roar. Of course, if it bothers you a lot, I'll come pay you the $1500 and an extra $100 for your trouble and take that "sorry ol' tractor" off your hands.

Nope doesn't smoke at all dead cold or hot. The engine runs really quiet The hyds seem good held the disks up on the back for the 10 mile ride back to my house. The gear oil is milky but I'll change it out. And someone used an Harley Davidson Muffler on it, lol but I'm gonna get a whole new vertical system for it! You know I was sure I would find something terrribly wrong with it for the cheap price, but nothing has showed up yet. I'm excited about getting to it, I just love the old Ford tractors. I think I'll still add an 8n to the stable. And Thanks for the advice on the governor thats great news. When in 4th gear you can pull the throttle all the way open and it will push the throttle lever back when engine speed gets to high.

Glad to hear you made an exceptionally good deal too! I recently bought a 1972 Ford 2000 with 3 cylinder gasoline engine, hi/low range, good PTO and hydraulics, two brand new rear tires and fresh paint for $1700. After buying it, I replaced the seat, steering wheel, front tires, and put an over-run clutch on the PTO shaft. Mine does have a little bit of blow by, but it doesn't smoke any out the exhaust pipe. I bushhogged about 3 acres of very high, thick grass and weeds and it used about a cup of oil, barely enough to bring the level down on the dip stick. I think I got a pretty fair deal too. I've got a little less than $2000 in the tractor now.
