I've got some questions about plow bolts and how they are installed. I looke in Machineries Handbook and SAE MFG Engineers Handbook and can't find any mention. I'm fabing a bolt-on cutting edge and need to spec the hole size and C-sink. I notice there are two styles, one with a tang and one with a square shank under the flat head. Do you just drill a oversized hole and csink it and let the square bite into the material.

Any plows I've ever worked with have a square hole with countersunk area above the hole. You might be able to drill out a hole only slightly over-sized, countersink, then take a 3-cornered file and "square" the hole somewhat.

The bolts you refer to as having a "tang" are called "clipped head bolts". They require a hole shaped just like the bolt head. (Somewhat oval, with that "tang" on one side)

Afternoon Shaley,
Just to add to what Farm has allready mentioned. Do an online Google search of plow bolts. There are a bunch of manufacturing companies out there that have them. Call one of these outfits up to get the hole specs for the particular plow bolt that your looking to use.

That should put you on target ! :)

Scott and Farm, Thanks. Did just that. With the sqare style, just drill a clearance hole and the corners grab.
