Help with Bush Hog Finish Mower

I had a oil leak at the lower shaft. I replaced the lower seal & the leak is still there. The dealer advised to check the bearing in the lower shaft but it appears tight......Any suggestionss, I'm at a stand still......

When you replaced the seal, did you check the shaft for wear or roughness. I had trouble on the 8N axle seals because of shaft wear. And have had trouble with surface irregularities tearing up new seals from time to time.

You could use John Deere Cornhead grease in your gear box...it is specially made thin grease for JD gear boxes and is used many times when gear oil is leaking out of a seal. I am using it in my generator gear box.

Thanks mostly & brin. I'm going to take it back apart & see if the shaft is rough (i didn't remember it being) & try another seal & if that doesn't work I will put that Cornhead grease in it.
Also I remember a o ring behind the seal. Does that need replaced also?

I would replace the o ring while you are replacing the seal just to be sure..I hope it all works out...if not the cornhead grease from John Deere is about $3.00 a tube. and it has worked for me.

If the shaft is damaged you might be able to get a speedy sleeve to fix it.
I have used several of them and they work well. They may or may not be available in the size you need.

If the gearbox is overful of lube or the wrong type lube or vent plugged, pressure can build up and force lube past the seal. Ken Sweet

yep.. and I'd check the seal seat and clean it well.. some seal seat areas need sealant too. it's rare.. but I have seen seals leak beside their OD..

DO check the vent and fill though as KS sugested.. it's a prime reason for a good seal to leak..

Ok all, I have torn this back down & have not found any reason for it to be leaking. I had replaced the top plug (with vent hole) when I replaced the seal the first time. There is a thick spacer that goes over the shaft & I don't know if this spacer is supposed to turn inside the seal or if the shaft is supposed to turn inside this spacer. I did find Very Light rust on the outside of the spacer. It appears that if the shaft turns inside the spacer that there would be less chance for it to leak but I don't know.

I would bet the metal spacer is suposed to turn with the shaft, and be sealed to it. I have seen pto shaft setups like that. IE.. a spacer around the shaft ( spacer back up the bearing ) and the seal rides on the spacer.. etc.
