Help with BLACK vinyl \"wrought iron\" fence

I am building a landscape border along part of my property line. It is a little over 90' long and about 25' deep. I was considering putting a wrought iron fence behind the border as a backdrop to the plantings.

I did a search on the internet and found a vinyl fence that looks like wrought iron, at a considerably lower price. The vinyl is black and has a UV inhibitor. I am just curious if anyone has an experience with this type of fence, it appers to be very different than a traditional vinyl fence and I had never seen black vinyl before so I don't know how it will hold up. If I put it up the fence will run 96' long, no corners and no gates. Just a straight run of fence.

Any thougths?

Just my thoughts; no experience... For $17 - 20 per foot you can get a lot of fence whatever the material. Have you priced steel or "wrought iron" to compare to the vinyl? I've seen some vinyl pasture fences that simulate board fences and they seem to hold up pretty well, but I would be concerned about the relatively thin components of this type of fence resisting a sag after prolonged exposure to the sun and elements. If you're going to spend that kind of dollars for a fence you need some dependable information!

They call it a "Lifetime Vinyl Fence" but then say it is made out of a composite formulation of polypropylene plastic and fiberglass. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Also what is this "paten-pending" stuff? They need a proof reader.
Other than that it looks like a good idea, why not try to get a sample out of them.

Re: Help with BLACK vinyl \"wrought iron\" fence

I have ACRES of white vinyl fencing for horses. I don't have experience with your type, but to ME vinyl is /was the way to go.

I spend more time mending/painting/replacing the six sections of wood fence on my property than I do the ACRES of vinyl.

Did I tell you my story about my FEL and the vinyl section? /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

To me it came down to time.

Re: Help with BLACK vinyl \"wrought iron\" fence

I've seen the same stuff Bob and am considering using it as an accent in our patio project. It looks nice but I would be worried about long term sag and such. Also, how do you work with it for non-standard lengths/heights? If you cut it, how do you attach it? In my case I would be shortening it height-wise /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

RobS . . . I DON'T KNOW EITHER!!! I have lots of questions about this stuff but can't find anyone who has actually used it, and the big vinyl fence guy in my area (who is also an occasional TBN poster) does not carry it.

In my case the fence is a decorative accent and a simple straight run. It will be a couple hundred feet away from my house and simply used as a border behind a large grouping of trees, shrubs and flowers. I am concerned about sagging and the long term effects of sun, but I can live with their stock sizes.

I did find another fence company that also lots of different colors of vinyl fencing, but the styles have heavier top and bottom rails.

But it's a bargain compared to aluminum fencing of similar design.

Re: Help with BLACK vinyl \"wrought iron\" fence

Can't say that I've ever priced them. All I've ever done is build my own wooden fences or done chain link. So, while it seems expensive to me, what do I know? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

The vinyl fences are really taking off around here. They look very nice. There is one white one that has to be 5-8 years old and it still looks great.

White ones seem to be very stable in the sun, I have some concerns for anything with color added and UV breakdown. Also, this style uses very thin cross members so I have some structural concerns.
