Oil & Fuel Help with 2520 fuel filter change

I was going to change the fuel filter today on my 2520 and I cannot get the canister loose. That sucker is tight! Has anyone else had problems getting it loose?

If it's like on my 4010, the fuel filter assembly is bolted to the frame with a single 12 mm bolt. Remove the bolt and lift and tilt the fuel filter assembly upside down to get a pair of channel locks onto the ring. This is what I did even the last couple fuel filter changes, because I don't like working blind putting the filter and glass back in place.

I couldn't budge the ring with it in place the first time. Doing the above, it was easy.

On my 4010, you can't use a socket to loosen the 12mm all the way, because of interference against the FEL mechanism. Hopefully, you have more room on the 2520. If not, just use a box end rachet wrench or an open end 12 mm.

Don't forget to turn the fuel off. There should be a valve just above the filter assembly.

Ralph, sounds like your talking about the water seperator, the filter is in a black canister (looks like a oil filter) which is above the seperator. I will take a picture in the morning.

Guess it's a spin off, like most oil filters?

My Benz fuel filter like this has a big bolt holding it in place. Guess you could spin it off, but the bolt is easier. I always said that fuel filters should be like this, and oil filters like is on it. For the oil filter, you just remove 2 13 mm bolts and take the top off. The oil drops into the sump. You lift out the filter canister/sock and replace it.

The fuel filter is up against the engine block. That's the way it was even on the old 1972 Benz. Saved me in -22 F weather. After two starts and runs for a couple miles, it eventually kept running. The filter warmed up enough to keep the fuel from gelling.

Here are some pictures of the little turkey. From what the dealer said remove the canister and the filter is in there and replace the filter and install the canister back on. As you can see it has some battle scars on it, and is winning now!

Well--I took a look at the manual on-line and it looks like the filter is in the water separator--not in that black canister--are you sure it's in there?? (not trying to be a pain, sometimes the on-line manuals are different, and when I had a 2520 the filter was in that "glass" bowl).

There is a small paper cartridge filter element in the fuel water seperator and then the black spin on fuel filter. Do as MrJimi says and use a strap type filter wrench on the spin on filter and you should be able to remove it. If not you can always drive a Phillips Head Screw Driver thru it and use that for added leverage.

I bought a 3 finger wrench at NAPA to remove the oil filter on my 4010. Looks as though you could use it on the bottom of your black canister if a strap wrench won't move it. The 3 finger wrench accepts a 1/2" drive socket.
