Background: I am retired and money is a concern. My new to me L2850 4wd with BF500 loader is used mainly for road maintenance, tilling the garden, placing occasion rip-rap, moving snow, clearing trees for firewood after hurricanes, and crazy odd tasks around the place. I mow with a ZTR mower. The rear tires are dry rotted and one is now leaking (they are filled). I would like to replace the tires, but my eyes are spinning in opposite directions as I try to determine the correct tire sizes and types. I thought R4 would be good- I have a set of chains. However, my usage is low and I don't think it would be worth a lot of money to convert rims.

I have:

on the rears, Bridgestone 13.6 - 24 Ag tires. The rims are marked 24XW11 (stamped into the steel on the rim). They are as old as dirt and are severely dry rotted. I think they have tubes- the fill stem has a collar nut on it. They have quite a bit of tread left on them.

on the fronts. Firestone All Traction Field and Road G-1 Ag tires. They are 8-16. They are newer and not dry rotted, but are severely worn. They are tubeless tires. They rims are stamped 16X6 LB. On the Firestone site the say the rolling circumference is 93"

I am wondering if the tire sizes are off and that would account for the severe wear on the front tires.

My manual calls for 7-16 on the front and 12.4 - 24 on the rear.

I think I like the larger tires (for loader work with rip-rap).

Questions:

Could I use R4's on these rims- if so what size?

They R1's have been doing the job, so I would be ok with using them- it would just be nice to have the grass get a little less damage after hurricanes.

I've read the R1 R4 threads- don't mean to rehash that or start a new battle.

Were the present tires correctly sized?

I don't know what the ratio between the front and rears should be.

Recommendations for online purchase also appreciated. No-one seems to have both the fronts and rears in stock. When I get correct size info, I will start local search in southern Maryland.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you.

I would not mix match R1 and R4 tire pattern, especially with a 4 wheel drive. As far as air pressure and a front loader attached I would run your front air pressure at manufacture maximum pressure. The air pressure listed in the manual is just for the tractor only, no loader attached. If you have a heavy load in your bucket at 7-16 psi tire pressure most likely your front tires are almost running on the rims. Might explain extreme tire wear on fronts.

I would find out the rolling circumference for the recommended tires in order to figure out what the rear/ front ratio should be. Once you choose a rear tire use that ratio to figure out what front size to use.

Thanks! I realize that I should not mix R1 and R4. I am leaning towards R1.

Where can I get the rolling ratio, or even the gear ratio? It's not in my manual. From my understanding, not all tires are the same so a set of tires from Titan could have a different ration that ones from Firestone, etc.

My eyes are spinning. This should not be so difficult.

Can anyone recommend a tire for the front and back that will work?

Go to tractordata.com

You should be able to get info on your tractor.

With the tire size listed there, and what size is on your rims now, a good tire dealer should be able to help.

Good luck

Yeah, my old L2550DT used 7.2-16 and 12.4-24. Same tractor. If you change to R4s, you
need to get R4 wheels. I hear that 7.2 size is hard to find.

Do you drive in 4WD on pavement? The leading front tires will wear much faster if you do.

Also, my stock front tires were under-rated 4-ply. I would get 6-ply fronts, and always
run counterweights to get weight off the front axle.

Thanks for the help. I only use 4WD on dirt and agree that 6 ply for fronts needed.

Anyone know the rolling circ. for the Bridgestone 13.6x24? I guess I'll go out with a tape measure and see what I come up with. Will call dealer on monday and try to find out the gear ratio. 13.6x24 r1

Bingo! I use his brother's place (right next door) for all my marine and lawn maintenance equipment.

FWIW, I found a sticker on the inside of the rear rim that specifies 13.6x24 and that is what is on the rim.
