Long story short, sucked up garden hose in tiller. Tied some off onto a tree and was able to pull some of it out. Any suggestions other than sharp knife and digging the hose out of the mud/muck in the tiller?

Bummer... I'd get a utility knife, a chair and a beverage. Live and learn...

I did something similar quite awhile ago but it was wire. It was a mess. I started to remove tines, trying to salvage the wire... after a bit, I said, screw it and started cutting through it everywhere and pulled loose lots of little pieces. It still took a lot longer than I thought it should have. Good luck.

Well, I've been there and done that both with hose and wire. You're stuck just digging it out with a sharp knife and patience.
Here's a tool I made that makes life a lot easier when these things happen.

I can definitely see how that tool would be a big help. It is a lot of cutting, 'digging' and pulling.

No chance I'm gonna help anyone with that! Have a good time.

get yourself some clippers, and start cutting everything. your hose is gone regardless. do not even try to save a few feet of hose. not worth it. just cut cut cut... turn things if you can, and cut some more, after a while of cutting you should be able to start pulling pieces of hose out that does not require the tines to turn.

right off i can not think of anything that would make cutting easier... a cutting wheel in an angle grinder, to reciprocating saw, to jig saw, to circular saw, to dremal... all the cutting stuff would either bend the blade, or gag you out from burning rubber of the hose.

i suppose a crafting store might have some sort of battery operated or 110v "snippers" for cutting cloth. ((motorized scissors other words))

you might try some "tree limb cutters" smaller handle held. "large scissors" in idea. but for cutting tree limbs off.
am guessing you will want the bigger type that has like a D blade with a J on other side. to kinda hook and cut. and then regular type of tree trimmers that look like a regular pair of scissors but bigger blades.

if tiller has a gas engine on it... dump the oil out of it, along with the gas. before ya start messing with things. or it will go all over the place, and get into places you don't want it to go within the engine.

if you have a cherry picker / engine lift, might be a way to lift things up and work on things. without being lumped over.

A utility knife and a beverage?!?!? My brother in law tried that once! Now he can only count to 9!!! Ok just kidding but we did get chicken wire stuck in the boat motor! That wasn't fun either!

I never got my garden hose, but wire in the tiller, wire and rope in the rotary cutter; just takes lots of time and sweat.

This may be the first situation I've ever heard of in my 50+ tears on this earth that can't be fixed with duct tape, WD40 & a Big Hammer :( ;)
